Sweating Feet in splints

Hi, My daughter Olivia has Cerebral Palsy, she is age 4. She wears a AFO on her left leg at night time and has them on both legs during the day. In the morning, after wearing her splint all night, her sock is soaked and drenched with sweat. I do use the cotton socks and they have helped, but only marginally. As a result, her feet are dry and cracking, her toenails are hardened and getting deformed. We do put a moisturiser on her feet every night. I have mentioned it to her neurologist and brought her to my GP but they have not advised anything. Are there any particular brand of socks anyone would recommend? Ones to wear with splints? They have to be long and it would be a bonus for her if they were pretty! I feel that long-term the sweating will really damage her nailbed and she will be left with permanently deformed toes. And what girl wants that! Any help is appreciated.

    Hi
My daughter also has CP and has to wear afos she had the same problem. So what we done was after she has a bath in the early evening moisturise her feet but dont put any socks on or afos let the air to her feet then just before bed wipe her feet with a wet wipe and the spray a small amount of foot deodorant let that dry and then put cotton socks and the night splints it doesn't cure but does help

    Hi @triona

Have you tried having a look at the following website?  It actually says that cotton is not the best for stopping feet sweating?
It has suggestions for other materials.

    Hope this helps,

Hi @triona and a warm welcome to the community! I too have CP and wear two AFO splints (only during the day at the moment), if I think of anything else I will let you know! I also am tagging @Richard_Scope who is the cerebral palsy specialist :)

    Hi @triona
When I was younger I wore GRO splints and I experienced this too. I wore sports socks for runners as the material helps the skin breathe as much as possible. I also used athletes foot powder and spray to prevent any kind of infection and damage to the toenails. As your daughter is wearing splints the humidity will increase toenail growth, so it's important to stay on top of that to try to prevent ingrowing toenails which, can be painful.

Yes, athletes foot powder and spray. @triona the spray is really cold so your daughter may not be a fan. It does get into all the areas though. Boots own brand is as good as any of the really expensive ones.

Kalenji is good. Not sure they with have leg length you need. They are available in some vibrant colours which your daughter may like.

Foot deodorant. When my son was a baby and we were treating his clubbed feet I purchased foot deodorant.
I also washed his feet each night with baby soap when we were done. Boots stock a spray you can try. Now that my son has to use braces I use baby wipes at the end of the day. I also clean his shoes once a week.

Hi, I have cp and have worn various types of splints both day and night on and off most of my life, a few years ago I found smartknit afo socks. They are fab! You can get them from a company called sensory smart store based in Hampshire. They also have an eBay store, just search afo socks and they’ll come up. They have quite a few types and colours, particularly in kids sizes! As for sweating in night splints, when I wear mine, I often keep that foot out of the duvet, particularly on warm nights. I also leave it a while between my bath and putting my splints on to let my feet cool and keep bare feet when not wearing splints to let them air. I also clean my splints regularly with baby wipes or medical wipes.
