Disability talks

Hi I’m Sally,

I am a new online friend, a bit about me,  I go round schools where I live and give them talks about my disability which is right sided hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy.  I go to Slimming World on a Tuesday morning.  I have been invited to a children in need day and give a talk on the 14 November, the kids have asked me to stay for dinner.  I’m also going round the local air cadets and other organisations to spread the word about disability and we can do anything we want with a bit of help.  If you want any more information about going into schools and do some talks about disability will you let me know and I will give you some advice about it.

I would like to do my talks to other local organisations in Ellesmere Port.  I would like to do talks to big shops like Asda.  I have had some trouble getting some help in Asda to do my shopping.  I have got a carer who does my shopping. I would like to do a talk about disability at my local Asda I have asked whether they would like a talk to the managers and they have said no and they never gave me an answer why.  Can one of you please contact my local Asda and ask for me.  They might say yes with scope involved.  Please will you let me know if you have any success.

Hi @Bertie80, thank you for sharing this with us. I am sorry to hear that you are unable to do your shopping. Unfortunately we are unable to contact ASDA on your behalf. Is this something your carer could help with? I was just wondering what trouble you have had?

I have been shouted at by a colleague for taking someone off the shop floor for helping me last year.  I booked for help with my shopping and I was angry at a colleague who knew I had booked someone to go round with me to do my shopping.  My carer gets what I want in heavy things and I get the light things or what she forgets or they do not have the thing in that time.  I have been embarrassed by this situation and I try not to ask for help.  I suffer from a lot of pain in my back.  I have been told by my doctor not to stretch or bend to much.

@Bertie80 Have you contacted local colleges and universities or not? Talk to the carer. Can she or he help?

I have not thought of university but I go into my local college.  This is a very good suggestion.  I will get onto the local university and other organisations. I will let you know how I get on.

    Hi @Bertie80
Welcome to the community, thank you for joining us. It is brilliant that you are educating children about disability, it is so important, as you have said people with disabilities can do what they would like to do, they just sometimes need a little more help. When I was at school, I used to give talks to my peers about what it is like to live with a disability and how anything can be achieved when you put your mind to it. It also provides a role model for any children who may have disabilities within the school as people with disabilities may not always be represented within the school in terms of both children and adults. Keep going with your talks, you are making a huge difference. Please if there is anything we can help you with just ask, there are many lovely people on the forum who will be able to help. Thank you.

    Hi @Bertie80 (Sally)
Good to meet you. I talk about CP and disability all over the country and as @WestHam06 has said I feel it is vitally important for people to hear and see that disabled people are like everybody else. Keep up the great work! If you want to swap notes or techniques let me know :)

Hi Richard, it’s Sally here,  I would like some advice on adding more content in my Cerebral Palsy like what I do for pleasure.  I have had my sister give me some advice because I have got a recording of one of my talks on my iPad.  I want to get my word out there.  To parents and grandparents alike.  Have you got any suggestions on how I can do this.  Thank you very much for your support in this subject.  Please can anyone help me.

    Hi @Bertie80
I think it's important when talking about hobbies, that you try to get across the fact that people living with CP can take part in a huge amount of activities. Speak from your personal experience.

Thank you that’s what my sister said.  I will have to alter my talk a little bit now.  I appreciate your help and support in this.

    Hi @Bertie80
You are doing a fantastic job and I think talking from personal experience is the best way to show that people with CP can join in with many activities. I think by doing this people can relate a person to the experience rather than just hearing the words. Keep up the great work! Thank you.

    West Ham 06,

I am very proud to go round schools to share my experiences of my life.  I was bullied at school by a teacher and I hear he’s in a wheelchair now, so he knows what it feels like not be able to do anything by himself.  That is not what I wanted to hear.  But he knows what it’s like being disabled now.

If it makes a difference, consider bringing in a disabled person. Pictures may also help you get your point across to the audience in the classroom too.
