Waiting for Hearing Aids

Hi, I am currently under investigation for hearing loss under the ENT department. I keep getting conflicting messages about hearing aids. In my first appointment I was told I was recommended for hearing aids and would be put on a waiting list while they ran blood tests to determine the cause of my hearing loss. Then I recieved a letter saying my hearing was normal and I was not recommended for hearing aids.

I am struggling at home currently just to watch TV or hold a conversation without constantly asking people to repeat themselves.

Has anyone else been through something similar? Can I get them to give me hearing aids regardless?

Hi @Jazkier and welcome to the community. I'm sorry to hear this and I've been through something similar with cochlear implants. I've had hearing loss for over 3 years now, hearing aids didn't work for me unfortunately. The exact cause of my hearing loss is still unknown. I was told cochlear implants might work, then they wouldn't and it was back and forth for a while before a specialist confirmed that they wouldn't help.

I do have some level of hearing but I can't understand what people say unless they speak directly to me, slowly and clearly.

I know it's frustrating, combined with my central vision loss I've given up trying to watch TV, haven't watched it in over 2 years.

They will want to get to the bottom of this, or at least try to get an idea of what has caused your hearing loss before trying devices like hearing aids.

I know it's not ideal, but do you use subtitles when watching TV? Also, your family and friends will learn how best to communicate with you over time. I know it doesn't seem like it now, but you will learn to adapt :)

There are various types of hearing loss, and Auditory Processing Disorder listening disabilities (the brain having problems processing what the ears hear).
I have auditory processing disorder which is also the underlying cognitive cause of my dyslexia.
You could have a look at some of the my PubMed Audiology research paper collections to find out what best matches your issues which are listed at

    I hope this helps
