National Read a Book Day 2020

Hello, hope you're all having a lovely day :)

As today is National Read a Book Day, we'd love to hear what book you will be picking up and reading today, or what your favourite book, or series of books, is. Looking forward to hearing from you. Below is a little more about the day and some super quotes about reading.

National Read a Book Day is celebrated on Sept. 6 every year, and is observed to encourage people to read books of their choice. While this is not a public holiday, many people mark this day by picking their favorite book and spending the day reading it.

Here are some inspiring quotes about reading

1. "I hope everyone that is reading this is having a really good day. And if you are not, just know that in every new minute that passes you have an opportunity to change that." — Gillian Anderson

2. "Maybe this is why we read, and why in moments of darkness we return to books: to find words for what we already know." — Alberto Manguel

3. "Children should learn that reading is a pleasure, not just something that teachers make you do in school." — Beverly Cleary

4. "A book lying idle on a shelf is wasted ammunition. Like money, books must be kept in constant circulation... A book is not only a friend, it makes friends for you. When you have possessed a book with mind and spirit, you are enriched. But when you pass it on you are enriched threefold." — Henry Miller

5. “If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.” ― Oscar Wilde

What books do you read?

So, what will you be reading today? What book, or series of books, is your favourite ?

Yesterday was cold and miserable, which is the perfect weather for reading! I am currently reading Breaking & Mending: A junior doctor’s stories of compassion & burnout by Joanna Cannon. So far it has been such a powerful book!

Some of my favourite books would have to be:
    • House Rules by Jodi Picoult
    • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
    • The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes
    • Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
    • Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine by Gail Honeyman

    Thanks for sharing @jaknit :)

How are you finding Game of Thrones?

Yes I can't finish a book in one day, that would be one mighty reading session.  I use audiobooks because of my visual impairment and I find them so enjoyable :)

Have you ever tried an e-book reader, such as a Kindle @meymay93? They allow you to make the text much bigger. Or you could try an audio book?

I'd definitely recommend audio books @meymay93! The voices are quite relaxing, so it could help you fall asleep too.

Just thought I would mention if you haven't heard of it or your library is still closed, many Councils have an online service and some have a click and collect service so you could order audio books through this service without having to browse the shelves.  Check your local Council Website for information.

Hi @meymay93! As @roberttaylor570 said, you can usually get audio books from your local library. The link to RNIB that @woodbine sent is also worth checking out :)

Hi @meymay93. This website is for children's books, but I think the links should still work for you: How to access books remotely. You can download audio books onto your phone, or e-reader if you have one, so hopefully you should be able to do it all remotely. Are you able to contact your local library?
