Hi
I would just like to know if anyone knew of any counsellors based in the Northamptonshire area that specialise in epilepsy and in giving counselling to those with epilepsy as I got my epilepsy through my Right sided hemiplegia.

Hi might be worth asking either your GP or if you are under an epilepsy nurse at the hospital ask them?

I have an epilepsy specialist nurse my General practice are rubbish. But it’s difficult as a epilepsy specialist nurse isn’t a counsellor and I also have right sided hemiplegia. It’s coming to terms with it as the epilepsy has and is destroying my life.

    Hello @Smells05

I'm having difficulty finding a counsellor specialising in epilepsy and wondered if you would benefit from one trained in chronic illness more generally.  You could try self-referring to a local NHS psychological therapy service and in your initial assessment they would advise if anyone in their team/any of their services could help.

While, there is always the option of paying privately (prices generally start upwards from £40 an hour).  The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy have a 'search for a therapist' webpage that allows you to look locally.  In the search tool you can enter a specific problem or specialism however again you might have more joy searching with 'health' or 'chronic illness'.

Besides these, there are mental health helplines/organisations you can contact anytime should you feel that your thoughts are overwhelming, they are:
    • The Samaritans on 116123 or by emailing jo@samaritans.org
    • SHOUT by texting 'SHOUT' to 85258 to speak to a trained crisis volunteer
I hope things get easier soon and if you ever want to talk/vent, we are here for you.

I was suggesting that you ask an epilepsy nurse to point you in the direction of relevant counselling.I fully understand how epilepsy is difficult to come to terms with as I have had severe uncontrolled epilepsy for 23 years now, but I did find in the early days that counselling helped me come to terms with it and to understand that my epilepsy didn't define who I was and never will.

    Hi @Smells05
I would contact the Epilepsy Society, here are their Support Pages. I would also suggest taking HemiHelp's Online Checklist. It might identify areas where you could need extra help.
