I was thinking about it but it clashes with a hospital referral I’ve had through so I can’t. Let me know how it goes though please?

I attended the Shaping Future Support Green Paper event today at Newcastle. Well it was attended by 6 disabled people and 6 DWP staff some of which had travelled from London this morning. It was so disappointing the lack of disabled people and I am not sure how well it was advertised.

The DWP staff wanted to know your experiences both positive and negative about claiming benefits, where there were problems and how you think this could be simplified. They wanted to know what your thoughts were of having one assessment for ESA/UC and PIP.

In a nutshell people seemed to share freely but not sure how much this will influence change or even really listened to. DWP staff seemed genuine but not sure how much influence or say they really have.

You can make your comments directly on this consultation through the DWP website and they are having zoom meeting if you are interested.

@littleacorn I’m glad you went along because at least you got to share your thoughts, I do hope if they have gone to this effort than you would think they would take onboard what people have to say.

I might have a look into the virtual meeting on offer.

Some very interesting points there. They said they were expecting 15 which in its self is not a great number and the peoplerunning the session had no idea where it had been advertised. They had no idea of how wheelchairs should leave the building  and said someone will come and get you when challenged on it.

It annoys me so much when people automatically go into powerpoint mode and more so the DWP at a disability event. I shouldn't be shocked really in this day and age! No kdea about loop servjce but they never mentioned it. There was someone there with autism and she left after 10mins.

    Just to update everyone:

There was an error on the information initially provided and the consultation event to be held in Canterbury on Thursday 16 September will focus on support available to disabled people to prepare for, seek and stay in work rather than rethinking assessments.

@Tori_Scope 's post above has been amended to reflect this change.

As one might have suspected, those making a career out of 'dealing with' disabled people have never considered  Disability Discrimination.   In this activity, they prove their own guilt of an offence under the Equalities Acts.   Did they do an Equalities Impact Assessment?   Did those employed on public funds to do an E.I.A. consider the prospect of these physical meeting places, and then declare there was no, repeat no, indirect or direct discrimination involved?     Really? Have they taken a fee, or settled back on their big fat salaries and public purse pension rights, after stating the plan is not discriminatory?   Not discriminatory against disabled people?  That despite pandemic, despite shielding, despite the need to shelter disabled people and their relatives, despite the fact a significant group of people are physically unable to leave their homes to travel, and despite the obvious "reasonable adjustment" of making participation on line and by zoom?

Most people can comprehend Race and Religious Discrimination.  Would it be o.k. to hold events about race, and religion but in such a way as to ensure   the exclusion of racial and religious groups?   Organise meetings in a pub, with strippers in the background, and see if it discriminates against participation by Muslims, especially women.  What about discriminating by sex, organising meetings late in the evening when many women will be afraid to venture out,  Indirect discrimination is still discrimination.   The great majority of Disability Discrimination is "Invisible, Indirect, Institutionalised, and worse in it's effects on people's lives than Racism" Sir Trevor Phillips.

Who in Scope waved this through without protest?  Does Scope have any lawyer? Any staff or volunteer who has heard of the Equality Act and the Public Duty?  Were they asked?

Willingly or unwittingly,  Scope's good name will be used as the rubber stamp to cover the backs of offenders.  "We consulted the entire disabled community, by sending a press release to Scope"

Please Scope, can you do what none of us can, and politiely insist on a copy of their E.I.A,, detailing why they concluded  it is not discriminatory to hold meetings by physical attendance with no reasonable adjustment alternative option to meet the needs of disabled people?    You can ask them as we cannot, if they think excluding black people from consultation is fine?   Especially from a consultation particularly relevant to ethnic groups?   If they do not think they would do such a thing, then you could insist on an explanation of  why they think it  is fine to exclude disabled people even from a consultation on disabled people?
