Well I use a quilt over me because I feel the cold my heating on 30 for a couple of hours tonight and in morning
10 days till Xmas eve1 -
I have a smart meter, though i don't have a screen with them i can see my usage on the app in Kwh and can work out the cost from that. I was putting my heating on for an hour or 2 in the morning and then from about 8pm for a couple of hours. Then the freezing cold weather came and my health really suffers during this type of weather so i started putting my heating on from about 4pm to 10pm. It was costing about £5/day.The last few days have just been so cold and i couldn't get warm no matter what i did, even with the electric throw i have.Yesterday i had a visit from my usual maintenance man just popping in to see how i was as he was in the area, very nice of him. He advised me that keeping my heating on with the thermostat set to about 19/20 degrees will cost less per day than turning it off and on because when you do this, it takes longer for the room to heat up so the boiler works harder to reach that temperature and very often not even reaching 17.5 degrees even in a couple of hours.Not sure whether i should believe him because i've read so many different stories about leaving it on costs more and it's a myth that it costs less.Yesterday i decided to put my heating back on about 1pm and leave it on until midnight last night and kept the thermostat at about 20 degrees. Was very nervous waiting for the app to update with my usage today but when it did i only used £5 of gas for the whole of that time. So, he was correct, it's cheaper to keep it on than it is to turn it off and on, at least it is for me. Don't know if this would be the same for others, of course it will also depend on the age of your boiler as mine is only about 3 years old.Of course it costs more than it did this time last year but worth it to be warmer.Just thought i'd put this here as it maybe useful information for some of you.2

Probably why I have had this chest infection for three weeks lol. But when it’s on tomorrow evening I will ask him to leave it on. The very highest we go is 15 ever.

I remember you're claiming Income Related ESA and there's been some cold weather payments activated in England/Wales, have you checked for your area? You can check here, there's been 2 in my area recently. It's £25 for each payment and will help with your heating costs a little. https://coldweatherpayments.dwp.gov.uk/search.php

@poppy123456 I'm glad you typed that I've been trying to work that out for awhile now. Google got me no where. my boiler is 12 months old and 12kw. I'm happy to see that only cost you 5 pound might try that tomorrow leaving it on.1

As you have a new boiler i would expect it to be energy efficent too. It's definitely worth experimenting if you have a smart meter so you can compare the costs. I was shocked at the same costs for the longer time but it does make sense. Anything to keep warmer for longer, can't stang being so cold. I can't remember the last time i felt this cold.Just don't look at the difference between this year and last year

I'll try it 5 hours in morning and then see the cost if its OK I'll keep it on, ill report back on it tomorrow. I can't stand this cold either.2

Please do report back, i'll be interested to know if it was cost effective for you too. Though you may have to try it for a longer period of time but it will depend on the temperature of your room when you first put your heating on and the temperature you set your thermostat to.

I'm hoping my theory too which is very similar will be cost effective
The timer is set from 7am to 11pm and temp set at 20 so it only comes on during this time if temp drops below. Seems to come on about every 2.5 hours but hope a constant temp is more cost effective rather than it having to start from cold every time plus I keep bit warmer

I don't work mine out I dare not but have allowed for it costing me 3 times more than last year and I haven't had it on through the night this year1 -

Hi all interesting chat last night - my eldest son says the same about leaving the heating on - he's usually quite savvy with money stuff and has a smart metre, i'm sure there was another chat a few weeks ago about the same thing.
I often wonder what would happen if most of us, in the country, were in high debt with our fuel by the end of next year, what would happen. x1 -
If i continued to use mine this way then it would cost me exactly 3 times more than last year. If i did it the other way, morning and later afternoon, it would cost me the same. Got up this morning and it's 14 degrees in my living room, never known it get that cold in the 3 years i've lived here.janer1967 said:

@SueHeath I can imagine lots of people will be in that situation. Its awful thought and just typical the temp is so cold when the cost has sky rocketed into orbit 💫
By the time there is more support and benefit increases next year the damage will have been done1 -

@poppy123456 thanks for that . Just need to get through the winter b4 new increases and extra support which will help but will be June b4 we see that
Hoping the temp increases soon for everyone sake
My bf keeps telling me off and saying to have heating on when I want to keep warm and he will help with cost but I don't want to rely on him and not everyone is as lucky as me to have that backup
Breaks my heart to read of people on here living in such cold conditions in this day1 -
