If his normal UC is £168 and he earns £170 he would have a deduction of £93.50 (55% x £170) meaning that £74.50 should still be paid. You need to check his UC statement to see what has been calculated,

However I think you may have misunderstood how UC works £168 is the carer element itself that forms part of the UC calculation - it isn’t paid separately. What is his normal monthly UC payment?

Carers element is part of UC. Earnings will reduce your whole UC entitlement, which for your son will include the carers element.

You didn't answer calcotti's question here.

Your son may not need to ring them  because his UC payment maybe correct but you haven't answered the question for anyone to be able to help.

Before ringing them he should should check the statement on his UC journal - he should check these every month anyway,
Above comment will not apply if his is a telephone claim.

That’s standard element for under 25s. He needs to check his journal to make sure carers element is added.
Did he report the changes that he was working?
In your first comment you said he claims carers allowance as well. This should be deducted in full from his UC entitlement. Therefore the £265.31 UC payment doesn’t make sense.

If he’s under 25, is single, and does not pay rent then his journal should show
    personal allowance £265.31
    carer element £168.81
    Maximum amount = £434.12
Deduction for Carer’s Allowance which you said he gets minus £302.03
Deduction for Advance £15/month which you mentioned.

That would mean his normal payment would be £117.09/month.

In a month in which he earns £170 there will be an earnings deduction of £93.50 as explained in previous reply. That would leave an amount payable of £23.59.
