Retirement Housing For People with Neurological Disabilities

I'm currently stranded in a standard flat because my flatmate died in 2022 and we were each other's carers. I have balance and mobility issues which mean I am mostly housebound. I need support to go to medical appointments but don't meet the criteria for any support from Adult Social Care.

My local housing department has refused to rehouse me to a more suitable home because they aren't currently housing people in their retirement communities unless the applicant is a wheelchair user and/or needs an adapted property

The standard reply to me asking who I am supposed to ask for help with housing is either to ask my local councillor or my MP to help

So...silly me, I thought I would give that a go.

Response from my local MP was 'I wouldn't know the answer as I don't work as a town councillor'

The response from my local town councillor was 'Here is a link for Citizens' Advice Bureau' as I'm not qualified to help people with disabilities.So...Off I trot to the CAB site where they have no advice that I can action as I don't have a disabilities advocate to sit in on any meetings I have at home.

I'm really sorry to hear of your troubles.

I'd suggest looking elsewhere for local help

Many organisations don't just deal with benefits claims but many other issues.

Hi there. Thanks for your reply

The link to 'Advice Local' sends me to the only independent advice centre they have listed which is the Citizens' Advice Centre which suggests the local councillor and MP

I think my best option right now is to start a crowdfunding page and keep buying lottery tickets lool

    I have the same problem.
I do need an adapted property as I can’t get up the stairs safely and in the shower as it is too small

I am waiting for a Occupational assessment from the council 🙄 still nothing

I vê had the worst experience with homeless prevention who say my property is suitable - it is not

they Lied and said I refused a care needs assessment

    I didn’t

the person who did it tried to infer I needed mental health support after she annoyed me to extreme distress with not delivering the food voucher til 5.30 pm in a Friday as she forgot

I went all weekend without food and help

I ate cooked tin beans and nut butter

the housing is non existent for single disabled people

    I have been told

To look for 12 month tenancy which is no good to me

I can’t live in a private tenancy as I need to adapt it and have a bath not Shower

I had medical evidence and gp letter

I am getting legal and practical advice this week re my social care needs and ADHD asd assessment

CAB said “ the gov wants us to vanish and disappear” they want us out of the way

monkey by forming pressure groups will things change

Being individuals fighting the bureaucracy of DWP and the local councils is trying to break us

    We deserve better
