just been listening to awes Streeting on LBC, they were talking about the NHS being on its knees, yet, they are funding climate control overseas before putting money into new NHS buildings !

And although they keep talking about the £22bn black hole, the FT put in a FOI to get info regarding this amount, but the request was denied, now that to me sounds suss

Suss it is. I don't think this lot have any time for fact, argument, accountability, transparency. Rule by decree.

Extract from Tony Benn's last speech to the House:

Then there is the link between the Commons and the people. I have seen many schoolchildren taken around the House, and have talked to some of them about how it has been a home of democracy for hundreds of years. In 1832, only 2 per cent. of the population had the vote. That may

    22 Mar 2001 : Column 510

seem a long time ago, but it was only 18 years before my grandfather was born. When I was born, women were not allowed the vote until they were 30. Democracy--input from the people--is very, very new. The link between popular consent and the decisions of the House can be tenuous.

Furthermore, nowadays, Parliament representing the will of the people has to cope with many extra-parliamentary forces--very threatening extra-parliamentary forces. I refer not to demonstrations, but to the power of the media, the power of the multinationals, the power of Brussels and the power of the World Trade Organisation--all wholly unelected people.

The House will forgive me for quoting myself, but in the course of my life I have developed five little democratic questions. If one meets a powerful person--Adolf Hitler, Joe Stalin or Bill Gates--ask them five questions: "What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? And how can we get rid of you?" If you cannot get rid of the people who govern you, you do not live in a democratic system.House of Commons Hansard Debates for 22 Mar 2001 (pt 13) (parliament.uk)

It's funny that governments have stopped buying gas from the Russians, who pump gas from under the Siberian permafrost. With warming, which will inevitably occur with the use of coal, the Siberian permafrost will melt, the gas will go into the sky and will be thousands of times worse for the entire Earth compared to if it was simply burned when used for industry or homes - England will generally drown. 🐠

Valid concerns, but just a quick note that not all Russian gas comes from permafrost and while methane is more potent than CO₂, its release from melting permafrost is a gradual process, not an instant catastrophe. Burning gas still contributes to climate change, just differently. As for sea levels, the situation is serious but not as extreme as England drowning. Obviously addressing climate change is crucial, but best not to oversimplify the issue…

Of course, it’s a very slow process. In the total production of Russia, the share of the shelf gas 5-10%, on it global warming does not affect as much as the deposits of gas in the area of permafrost (90-95%). It is known that the USSR bought large quantities of food, and the Russian Federation exports a lot. One of the reasons - warming of the climate, lol). So if the confrontation continues, it may be profitable for the Russians to simply release Siberian gas into the air and accelerate global warming, flood the enemy’s coasts, and provide themselves with a warmer climate. Why not?
