Interesting snippets from the Labour conference

my concern is stoping pensions fuel allowance I personally believe in a universal payment. Money can be brought back by a tiny % on the super rich who have a system were they pay just 28 % a lot less than the average person. So Eve. If they payed 29% they would still b super rich and the £ could heat the elderly

the new government needs to make it clear how those who are entitled will automatically get fuel allowance this winter . So if it’s mean tested those on basic pension or pension credit should just get it

I knew about starmers link(s) to ppl with disability but not reeves
(well SEND children but you’d hope they’d care about special needs/disabled adults also)
Which makes it even more puzzling that they aren’t shutting down the stressful rumours concerning disabled community and welfare
(I hope my logic on this one is busted but I keep having D Cameron flashbacks)
14 years of the tories make you a cynic and always expecting the worst - it’s sad that Labour hasn’t quite grasped how much certain social groups need a breather or at least a straight answer………keeping saying ‘things are going to get worse’ but not giving details for 2 months is stressful as hell (like a cat playing with a mouse)
Rant over - think I’m signing off for the night but I’ll continue posting interesting quotes from the Labour conference over the next week2 -
some of you may be freaking out over the front page of the I newspaper today
I’ve read the article in full and for the most part the headline is sensualist and the i newspaper (who should know better) have created the story from quotes I myself posted yesterday from the Labour conference
I’ll post screenshots of the I newspaper article below and hopefully a scope moderator can back up my analysis (though I’ll be disappointed Labour a bit if they don’t reject /clarify the headline which will cause stress to the disabled community regardless)

got a feeling today may be a **** day:
the problem is it’s all very well going after fraudsters but we know from the past (and excuse my analogy here) when the dwp uses a net to catch ‘sharks’, the ‘sharks’ often figure out how to evade the net and they end up catching ‘turtles’ (whom get injured by the net) and often the dwp don’t care what they catch, just as long as they catch something to meet their ‘quota’
plus fraud is next to zero on pipIf starmer does say this it will bring untold stress amongst the disabled community and erode trust even further (not helping that no disabled person has been appointed to Kendall board
hopefully some mps speak out for us this week like they have for pensioners
edit: labour ministers may be saying that it’s ‘duck’ season but it’s going to sound like ‘rabbit’ season to many disabled0 -
this is the type of thing Labour should be focusing it’s energy on
(and yes I’ve personally experienced ppl thinking you’ll work for free as your disabled as they are giving you the chance to work from the goodness of their hearts)

apparently there was a round table at a fringe event of the labour conference (chaired by scope) discussing pip and the additional amount that an (average?) disabled person needs to survive
I’ll try and look up snipits myself but do any of the scope mods have any further details on what was discussed, who turned up, etc………..?

TRIGGER WARNING ARTICLE BELOW
God I hope the times got their info wrong as it would be unthinkable for labour to resurrect a certain Tory idea which was basically a human rights issue (it may be okay if implemented in the right way after reading the article in full…………….but in recent times governments have a bad record of abusing powers and that’s the major concern, lack of trust across the board)
Starmers speech starts at 2pm today I think so hopefully things will get clarified then

I’ve been finding a lot of scaremongering news articles in the past few hr suggesting immediate cuts in welfare award amounts (I won’t post any as these media sources have been irresponsible writing these)
But I will post a link to the IFS report that seem to be the ‘inspiration’ behind these articles
link to ifs pdf report:

another really good article from the big issue:

You can tell they understand ordinary people. Keir Starmer's wife was wearing an £1,100 dress.

the main snippets of interest from starmers speech
link to the whole speech for anyone who wants to read it:
I’d like to comment on this particular part that I found extremely interestingI’ve been very winded up in the past on both the Tory/Labour dwp ministers, chancellors and pm’s that the only way that a disabled person can be useful to the uk is by working (full time) paying ni/income tax (and doing our best to be silent & not ask for any help or be an inconvenience)
I’ve always said there is more than one way for a disabled person to contribute to society and full time work is only a single way (and a unrealistic one for many disabled who’s disabilities aren’t predictable and can’t really be timetabled in)
For example volunteering (when health allows) is a very meaningful contribution that those who can’t quite cope with paid employment could do (esp things like volunteering in care homes and schools - police checks are easy to obtain) - but more often than not the dwp ‘punish’ you for officially volunteering (by sanctions, reassessing or even stopping esa/uc awards) so many disabled won’t even try to give something back to society if it threatens the welfare award you need to survive
Talking to people in the past - many’s uk citizens problem with ppl on welfare is those that get money but gives nothing back - many don’t care how you give back just that you try and make an effort
So starmer here is totally right and he as well as reeves and Kendall need to realise that success for many disabled isn’t as narrow minded as the goals they have announced to the public (disabled off benefits and in the workplace paying taxes)
- if they continue like this Labour is setting themselves up for complete failure (their plans sounds like it’s hinged on many disabled playing ball and singing a song they may not be suited to - bullying and pulling disabled into poverty will have the opposite effect)
No more of that bloodied stick………..Labour needs to start growing some fat & juicy organic carrots 🥕

I still can’t believe we may be here again after less than 3 months after the tories getting booted out
worst part is there’s still a long wait between now and the budget/white paper and that wait will do a lot of damage to many disabled ppl who feel like they are in limbo and have little control over their own present and future

I feel sick with stress listening to Labour. In a way, it's worse than listening to the Tory government in its rabid death throes because there's no hope of something better.

so starmers a snake - that wasn’t on my bingo card back in July
I feel most sad and angry for those disabled really pushing for others to vote Labour as that was the route to a better future and they didn’t want to risk a split vote in the geHope is a dangerous thing to lose and I hope the silence from the scope mods and prominent posters means they’ve been thrown by the number of nasty surprises and more of us are on the same page
Charities giving comments criticising gov policy (which is then buried by media) is just nowhere near enough
disability charities are our voice and have more chance of ‘organising’ the bulk of uks 14mil citizens than any one individual and charities need to join forces and plan something big as it’s now very much disabled human rights on the line
it Is unthinkable that starmer/reeves/kendall be allowed to continue 14yrs of the tory dirty work and we continue getting verbal attack
Our lives are just as valuable as everyone else’s

I agree with both of you. I could be wrong but I've heard nothing to panic about yet. We do need to cut down on fraud in benefits claimants - think of the organised crime gangs. Gov.uk defines long term sick as signed off work for more than 4 weeks. Disabled is defined as having a condition, mental or physical, that lasts for more than a year. Completely separate co-horts.
