I am so stressed out by all of this, I think the lack of clarification just makes things worse… I was hoping labour would be better than conservatives on disability matters but they don’t seem to be too bothered…
I think my biggest worry is pip going over to a voucher scheme because I currently use pip to pay for my Motability and bills! How on earth would that work? I use pip to pay my bills most of the time I don’t have enough to cover them otherwise! Will they be giving vouchers for energy companies? It’s a ludicrous idea.
And the idea of spying on your bank accounts, I do understand where they’re coming from but this is a privacy nightmare! Are we not entitled to privacy anymore?
Sorry for the rant this stuff makes me so stressed and upset!

Yeah, me too. This morning has been the most stressful I can remember, waking up to this bovine excrement.
Labour have just swerved so sharply and far to the right, the Tories must have whiplash just trying to see what's happened.

Remember the DWP have always had the ability to investigate a claimants bank account if they suspect fraud. They are not going to monitor everyone's bank account continuously, only if they have reasonable suspicion of fraud.

While I understand the distinction you're making, the … "meta-message" that's been carried with what's been said is "benefits-scroungers- badwrong!", and is broadly tarring a whole swathe of people with the same brush.

to be fair to myself the only 2 links I provided on these latest quotes was from the guardian and bbc - source wise you can’t get more reputable
and I read through the articles pretty carefully
In the past the tories said that those who can work will work with the most vulnerable being protected
Starmer in his quotes didn’t explicitly differentiate between the different type of ppl who claim long term sickness benefits (whether disabled or not)
At best he acknowledged for some it would be a difficult transaction (but at no put suggested anyone on long term sickness benefits would be exempt from this push into work)
I am hoping the whole interview will be posted soon online so I can post it and we can see the full quotes and actual tone used
But to me starmers words were cold and I think a few of you are grasping on straws (most on long term sickness benefits do have a disability and/or health condition - starmers quotes didn’t suggest any exemptions, just it would be tough on some)
if you look back at the analysis of a few media articles I’ve been more than happy to call out scaremongering by the media - but this is direct quotes from starmerI want to see the entire video of this interview but it’s very hard to be optimistic about any of the direct quotes from starmer I’ve read today so far
but for those sticking to their guns and saying this won’t be imposed on scope forum members, I’ll post the bbc write up of starmers quotes and you point out where it suggests disabled ppl will be exempt from this (I’ll happily eat my words and hold my hand up if wrong)
sorry if I sound negative and of course final judgement will be made after the autumn budget and disability white paper which should be published by the end of November
But bluntly the ‘preview’ does not fill with hope
And the provisional calling of starmer as a snake is based on now compared to the starmer at the Labour leadership vote 4 years back (particularly 2 different people it seems currently)

for all this that he is saying though NHS waiting lists need to be fixed and i can't see that happening any time soon the tories will be back in next election

If people think they are not targeting the disabled (Those on this forum) Then why are they considering making PIP a non cash payment? That surely is aimed right at the disabled, not those who are long term sick.

I think I’d get in trouble in replying in the way I’d like to
I don’t appreciate the implication that I’ve lost my head a bit
I’m an extremely logical person that if they sees a creature that waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck, bluntly my (first) impression will be that I’m looking at duck
I’m happy to peddle back in the future and apologise if I’m off the mark.
But at no point did starmer suggest that not working was an option for the sizable percentage of the disabled community who wouldn’t be able to regardless of support introduced
And I’ve called out ppl on our so called side in the past (and gotten attacked for it) - I’m the first one that says the disabled community need to be more realistic in their demands and sympathising with the dwp/treasury (part way through writing a multi part post on it on another scope thread)
I am disgusted about the language starmer is using today
But final judgement will come on how Labour intend to encourage more disabled to work
Welfare cuts and making pip means tested will be counterproductive (another benefit freeze for 1-2 years is the only semi acceptable compromise and I don’t think many scope members would agree with me there.
And yes there are schemes but they are the ones the tories introduced - the job centre doesn’t even have specialist disability advisers anymore as the tories got rid of them - job support for disabled is currently woeful and Labour has a lot of hard work to do before even asking one disabled person if they would look towards work with the right support
I can’t tell anyone how worried they should be because that’s due to personal circumstanceI’ve personally got a few additional reasons why I’m pretty mad at the path Labour is taking but I won’t share in public what those are (as I know even with the massive incoming hits my future is likely to take - I still have my support system and that makes me a fortunate individual) only say that my goodwill, patience and understanding towards Labour is in short supply

They want to make the banks responsible for flagging up suspicious activity to the DWP, just as they already have to inform the police of abnormal transactions

what counts as being disabled in the uk under the uk officially definition is actually pretty open (anxiety and depression are defined as disabilities- which regardless of your opinion on that would push up the number of uk disabled by a lot
