We post about a lot of weird national and international days, and today is no different. Today it's the turn of the humble egg. So Happy World Egg Day to all the egg lovers out there 😁

Here's a few silly egg facts for all who celebrate:

Did you know there's a World Egg Throwing Championship held in Lincolnshire every year? Teams from across the globe come together to try and beat the record for the furthest throw. In 2016, the New Zealand team threw an egg 309 feet, roughly 94 metres, and that's been the record to beat since.

Andy Dunlop, president of the World Egg Throwing Federation (yes, it's a real thing) says that an egg will likely explode if you throw it any faster than 120mph.

Ostriches lay the largest eggs on the planet. But in 2010, a 6 month old hen called Harriet laid an egg that measured a massive 23.1cm in diameter. That's roughly 2-3 times the size of a normal egg. Poor Harriet. Her owner said she was limping a bit afterwards (understandable, Harriet), but she lived a normal healthy life.

We're mostly used to seeing brown or white eggs in this country, but chicken eggs can come in all sorts of colours. One type of chicken called the Araucana is known to lay pretty blue and sometimes green eggs.

A 2021 study found that the UK's favourite egg dish is scrambled eggs, closely followed by boiled and poached. I'm quite partial to a soft boiled egg with a gooey yolk, especially if there's a few salty chips on the side to dip in πŸ˜‹ πŸ₯š

I'm sure there's more egg facts to be discovered but I won't spoil you with too many. Feel free to share any you've come across!

And in the spirit of World Egg Day, we definitely need to know how you like yours. Are you a poached fan? A scrambler? Or is a dippy egg more your style? Let us know!
