Pip review timescale
Hi all, hope everyone is well.
My pip is scheduled to end in June 2025 after 4 years. I received a txt message from the dwp on Wednesday saying that my pip is now under review ( my first time), and I am currently waiting for the forms to arrive.
I just wanted to ask if anyone knows what sort of timescale there is- currently-for pip reviews to be processed?. I know that pip reviews can possibly take a long time.

Extremely long for the majority of people. Just as an example, I returned my review form end of November 2023 and I'm still waiting for a decision. The last text I received was in August, nothing since then.
Your current award will continue until a decision is made. It will be extended for up to 1 year if a decision isn't made by the time it's due to end. You will receive a letter telling you it's been extended, nearer the date.
Please make sure you treat it as a new claim, even if there's been no changes to your health conditions. Do not just write no change and nothing else.
If you need extra time to return the form you can ring and they will give an extra 2 weeks.

Thank u so much for your reply @poppy123456. Wow you have been waiting almost a year!. I have been seeing alot of people saying dwp are really backed up with new pip claims/ reviews, and reviews are taking a really long time.
Thank u for the advice, yes I will certainly be putting down as much detail and evidence as I can, and treating it as a new claim. I have heard the success rates for reviews can be low.

My review took seven months this year.
If you are fighting an appeal the current waiting time is around eighteen months. I am not sure if they are still doing appeals via video conference calls or they are back to going to court.

Appeal hearings are done by either telephone/video or in person.

Thanks for the reply @Kev1n . Is that 7 months from the date u returned your reveiw forms?.
Sorry u have to go through tribunal, I have a feeling I may have to go through the same, as I have been reading about alot of people having to go through it. I had to appeal my initial pip claim too, as my mr was still rejected, however the decision was changed before it ever went to tribunal.

Review stats up to July 2024 says that 54% have award maintained, 19% have award increased, 7% award decreased and 19% refused. Full stats can be seen here.

Thank you for that @poppy123456. The stats are higher for -award maintained or award increased than I thought. Which is great to see.

I've been waiting 13 months now and still heard nothing, Except the 2 month texts they always send saying they still have it etc.. it was extended until may next year but i expected to have heard by now. You'd think with lifelong conditions and cases like mine which won't improve and have enhanced on both they'd just do paper based and get it over with to lessen the strain 🙄

I unexpectedly had a phone today at 4.30pm from a decision maker wanting to ask me some questions. He was really nice and apologised for ringing out the blue. He asked me several questions and the call lasted for about 10 minutes.
At the end he thanked me for answering the questions. I asked if I would need an assessment and he said no, definitely not. He told me he would be making a decision by tomorrow at the latest and I would receive letter in the post within 7-10 days.
Let's hope he's true to his word and I don't need an assessment.

That’s Great news Poppy although an unexpected phone call can be quite scary. This happened to me on my last review, i was asked a few questions and told it was a paper based assessment. True to their word they didn’t give me a phone assessment and my review was complete.
I hope you have the best outcome from your review 😊 You’re always so amazing with all your help and advice.

Hello Poppy,
So good to hear that your review is finally being dealt with, albeit a year after your planned award review was initiated. It sounds like even though your form was returned in November last year, it has taken until now for it to even be triaged by a Case Manager. Can I ask, when you returned your review form, did you include any up to date evidence at that time from any medical professionals or did you just return the form detailing your difficulties?
My planned award review was initiated in March this year and I returned my form detailing my continuing difficulties in April 2024. I also included up to date medical evidence with my form. I received a text shortly after to acknowledge receipt of my returned form and have had a couple of texts in the meantime to say they still have it and haven't got round to progressing my review yet. The last text received was at the beginning of this month.
I am just wondering if I should expect an out of the blue phone call too at some stage from a decision maker. I avoid answering any calls from unknown numbers so it does worry me. I was hoping to avoid an assessment by having provided relevant recent medical evidence but the long backlog might mean it becomes out of date. It does sound like you may well have avoided an assessment after your phone call with a Decision Maker. Were their questions about your what you wrote in your form?
Thank you for any insight.1 -
Fingers crossed for you Poppy!
My PIP review forms arrived Jan 2023.
Phone assessment May 2024.
Result Aug 2024.Now waiting on my MR, which they've said (text arrived yesterday morning) will be dealt with by 28 Dec 2024. 😐️

Hi yes the seven months were from signed and dated form. I received constant updates via text message but having said that, they said they have revied my award but I am still awaiting the decision, they never rush themselves.
I have had to fight three appeals with the DWP for the same problems, the last time they had not one but two people following me and videoing me. When I received a copy of thier, laughable evidence it was clear they had tried some fancy editing to make the very little video they got in the two weeks of watching me, look worse than it was. Having done a video course myself in college I pointed this out to the judge and the panel, the judge was less than happy and warned the DWP regarding their behaviour. Needless to say their case was thrown out with my case alone with the surveillance costing the tax payers thousands, laughable when they say they are doing this to save the tax payer money.
Since going through the intimidation and victimisation not to mention the stress, I have learnt that action can be taken against the DWP for such actions in which thousands have won undisclosed sums, again costing the tax payer a pretty penny or two. I for now am happy as long as they leave me alone, only time will tell and yes I will if possible take action.

@Butterfliess thank you, that's very kind of you! @TheManFromLondon thank you, I sure will. I haven't really thought much about it for most of the time but the past couple of weeks it's been on my mind. I'll be glad once it's all done and dusted. Thank you also @Albus_Scope
Thank you. My review actually started on 30th October 2023, that's when I received the very first text.
I included a OT assessment report which did go into a considerable amount of detail. Other than that apart from a repeat prescription list I just included real world examples with my form and went into a considerable amount of detail for each descriptor that applies to me.
All review forms are sent straight to the decision maker/case manager and from there they look at everything you sent and potentially previous records and see if a decision can be made without needing to send your file across to the assessment providers.
They will only ring you if they have questions to ask. He didn't ask me about anything about what I had written on the form as such. I did report changes to some of the descriptors that apply to me and he wanted to know when my conditions got worse. He also asked about any other treatment that I may currently be going through and what the long term plan was. I answered truthfully and told him what he wanted to know. One of the things I wrote on the form was adding my name to the housing list due to worsening of condition and needing adaptions that couldn't be done where I was currently living. I have since moved house so I did mention that. I also mentioned additional medication which I wasn't taken at the time I filled out the form.
If it helps it was an 0800 that he rang from, they don't usually withhold their number so if you do receive a call from that number then you should answer it if you can.
I had a paper based review back in 2021 but that time I didn't receive a call at all.
I didn't receive a text this morning to say my review was complete so I'm guessing no decision was made yesterday but he did say it would be made by today.
I hope you're not waiting too much longer for your decision.

Hello everyone and Sunny,
When I was awarded the first time they put an extension on my claim for it to last longer between renewals and im not sure if this is normal practice? So a few weeks ago I sent my over the top renewal form back and so far its been almost a month and heard nothing, I do know through reading posts that some people have waited over a year whilst some get a MUCH quicker reply from DWP/PIP so this must be on your situation I would have thought, but if your waiting ages that doesnt mean anything at all bad!! cause my mates wife waited 14 months and was passed again whereas my uncle waited just 5 months and also passed…

Thank you. I haven't had the decision yet so I will wait a little before celebrating. 😉

They were extending awards during covid so that's probably what happened to you. Once they receive your review form they sometimes send a text to tell you it's been received.
Yes, the length of time a decision takes is no indication of what the decision is likely to be.

Thank you Poppy for such a detailed response to my query. It's very helpful to know that you did provide relevant medical evidence along with your returned review form last November. It sounds to me like the Decision Maker called you because he simply needed clarification of the changes you reported to the descriptors that applied to you in your form in order to determine whether or not your review needed to be passed onto an assessment provider.
Because of the considerable backlogs, there is now an increased effort by DWP case managers to try to keep decisions 'in house' about continuing PIP awards at review unless further medical evidence is really needed. A DWP case manager, as you know, cannot contact your G.P. or other medical professionals directly. Only an assessment provider health professional is permitted to do so.
You may be aware that Stephen Timms MP (Minister for the Disabled) answered a question in the House last month about trying to accelerate review decisions via case managers without the need for a functional assessment where possible. See link:Written questions and answers - Written questions, answers and statements - UK Parliament
Hopefully, after your call with the Decision Maker yesterday, he is true to his word and has enough to recommend your award continues. Fingers crossed for you.
It is helpful to know that they don't call from an unknown number and I will have to brace myself for any calls from an 0800 number in future and make an effort to answer them. I have just received a letter from the DWP extending my PIP award for a further 12 months. My current award was due to end next month and it is so my payments continue whilst my review is yet to be completed.
My last review in 2020 was paper-based and I also didn't receive a call and it was completed by a case manager, not sent to an assessment provider at all. On that occasion, I reported no change to any of the descriptors and provided relevant medical evidence as well as gave detailed answers with up to date examples of my difficulties. This time, again, I have no reported changes (other than medication type and dosage) and given detailed answers to the relevant descriptors as well as provided a recent report from a medical professional.
Hopefully, I don't have to wait too long but it sounds like if it took 11 months for your review to even be triaged, then I will be waiting at least until the spring. I returned my forms and evidence in April this year.
Thank you again, Poppy, for your insight and best of luck! 😊1
