Hi all,

I'm new here, I'm a soon to be single mum with a disability and I'm hoping to get some advice and help as I'm feeling very overwhelmed right now

    I am wondering if there is any help for single mothers with a disability? My partner has been my registered carer for the last 3 years but he will soon be leaving and I'm terrified and overwhelmed at the thought of looking after my toddler alone. I have serious mobility issues due to a spinal condition and so I can't pick her up or anything and can't even cook meals...

    You can refer yourself for a needs assessment from your local Authority. An Occupational Therapist will come to your home and assess you.

    Hi @Shell2025 and a warm welcome to the community!

    I understand that this must be an overwhelming situation for you. It is a big transition. It's completely valid to feel this way and please know that help is available.

    It may be helpful to explore Home Start. This is a great organization with volunteers who can offer weekly support to parents with young children and help with practical tasks and wellbeing support. They have a page about they support disabled parents on their website. You may be able to self refer or you may need a professional referral such as a GP.

    Gingerbread also has some really good concise information on being a disabled single parent with some more tips on how to get more support including financial support.

    I’m a disabled mum and like you I had a partner who wasn’t about and eventually left. I can try and answer any questions or worries you may have on how to manage in small ways x
