PIP - Back Payments
Does anyone know if there are written rules regarding back payments?
In my case, I had standard rate and following lots of fractures I notified DWP, completed a new 'How your disability affects you form', went through another assessment and the rate was changed to enhanced rate. The change was not backdated. Does anyone know the actual rule?
TIA Kev.

Hi and welcome, it will only be backdated to when the new decision was made, as you already had an award in place and then notified of a change it is only the change that has given the enhanced rate.
You only get backdated money if you appealed and won the original decision1 -
Hi all. This is a bit of a minefield. It seems the terminology is particularly important. I phoned DWP and they originally told me that I had a review. Under this circumstance there is no back payment as the effective date is the date of the decision. However, I had actually informed them of a change of circumstance that had lasted at least 3 months. I had to submit a new claim, this IS NOT the same as a review. I was told that a mistake had been made and it should have been backdated to the original phone call. I was put through to a claim manager who confirmed the rule and in fairness was very apologetic and said they will get it fixed today and it wasn't he would personally fix it.
Quite important for people to know.0 -
Thank you for sharing with us and yes a lot if terminology that means different things

If it's a review then you won't receive backdated money. A change of circumstances will, providing you've had the worsening of conditions for at least 3 months. In this case here, Kev has had his claim backdated, which is correct.

hi please can you help with the below
I was receiving standard mobility but my condition worsened drastically. It worsened in around April/may 2024 and then again in September 2024. I submitted change of circumstances call on the 8th October and was sent forms etc. then I had my assessment in December and decision 20 Jan for enhanced for both.
I haven’t received letter but called up about back pay as online calculator shows around 2245.03 in backpay from 8th oct - 18 Jan but pip on the phone said I’m only getting 124 backpay due to some being sent to debt management. Contacted debt management they said 1200 is owed but due to needing the money they are doing a payment plan for me. But there’s still around 1k missing from backpay owed?
Called pip and they said that I should get a letter explaining but the 124 is money owed from 31st - 7th January and to wait for a letter regarding backpay.
Surely there’s a lot of money missing somewhere, is it usual for them to send separate letters for backpay?

Sometimes it can take a few weeks to pay what is owed. There’s been members here who didn’t receive it straight away.

called them and they said it looks like they haven’t back paid it from I submitted the changes but from when the decision was made, which isn’t right as on my change of circumstances form I had written this had been since April and increasingly worse in September and I decided to report the change in October. I’ve got the evidence of me writing on the forms the changes from April 2024. I was told I have to call back when I receive my decision letter and do a MR? I don’t want to jeopardise my current award as I’m happy with being awarded enhanced for both but I just want what I’m owed which is my backpay as I needed to purchase my new mattress for my back. So deflated and confused

You said that some money was sent to debt management so they must have awarded it earlier than when the decision was made. I would expect it to be from when you reported the changes in October.
I’ve definitely heard of some people having to wait a few weeks for any money that’s owed.
