Support for my daughter's disability

Hi all,
My 20 year old daughter was diagnosed with severe hearing loss last year. Apart from signing up with a variety of hard of hearing charities for information,  claiming pip and obtaining a bus pass,  we haven't received any other help in dealing with my daughters disability either socially or emotionally. Can anyone help?

    Hi @spovey66,

Welcome to Scope's online community! It's great to have you here.

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you've been having with finding support for your daughter. We have a page on our website about hearing impairments with links to specialist organisations as well as information about support.

Do you know if there is a deaf club or charity in your local area? I'm mildly deaf and I often get involved with my local deaf group when it comes to events such as quiz nights and information days. They're great fun! If there is such a group available near you, perhaps your daughter may find this interesting and useful?

I hope this helps! I've also moved this post into our Visual and Hearing Impairments category, where other members of our community may be able to advise.

If you have any other questions, then please do get in touch!
    Liam

Social services? Although, I've found them to be less than helpful.

    Hi @spovey66

It sounds as if you and your daughter might be finding it hard coping with this new diagnosis. I hope you have managed to find some information and support from some of the charities listed on the website that @LiamO_Dell highlighted above. Other people with the same condition are often the best places to get support as they've 'been there and done that'. Your daughter might like to have a look at https://www.buzz.org.uk which is a website full of information and advice written for teenagers and young adults with hearing loss. Also think about contacting the NDCS helpline who can point you in the direction of local deaf youth clubs and other resources that will help http://www.ndcs.org.uk/family_support/support_in_your_area/index.html. Finally, if you're very concerned about your daughter needing additional emotional support then do ask her audiologist or GP to refer her to a hearing therapist, clinical psychologist or counsellor so that she can get some extra help adjusting to the hearing loss.

    All the best

    Vicki
