Remaining politically neutral during General Election 2024

Why are assistive chairs so ugly?

Hi, I'm Archie a product design student at Nottingham Trent university. I am currently working on a project looking to create an assistive chair that can make home life easier for someone who struggles with sitting and standing, but in a way that maintains an attractive and desirable aesthetic. I think there is a huge gap in the assistive chair market for a product that people want to have in their homes and an assistive product that will complement their home interior.

I have created a short survey that only takes a minute to complete, I would extremely appreciative if anyone who does struggle with standing up could fill it out to help me with my research.

Use this link to access the survey:

Thank You

Hi there I understand what you are trying to do but with Scope we have to be careful of any 3rd party links shared by anyone. So the only place we can post these links or the research and opportunities section. I'm currently looking for a remote control chair where you can lie on and put your feet up on but all of them look like old peoples chairs and I'm a 21 year old.

Yes exactly durhamjaide2001! For my design the goal is to create a chair that doesn't look like an 'assistive' chair at first glance, so it could be used by anyone, and then the assistive features to help people stand up can help whenever they're needed. Whether that's later in life when the user may develop arthritis or injure themselves, or for people who already have a physical condition.

There is often research students looking at designs of things for disabled people, chairs wheelchair etc but nothing seems to change. We have no choice but to buy products which look terrible

@littleacorn What do you think the reason for why nothing changes is?
