Hello I'm new here

I've joined here hoping to chat to new friends. I am 59 years old and I live in Yorkshire with my house cat and the youngest of my two daughters. I have osteoarthritis in both hips and my left knee. Moving around and getting out and about is extremely difficult at times, so I don't get out much. My hobbies include gardening (with help), watching tv and when I can't move far from my chair, knitting and colouring. It would be nice to chat to anyone about a variety of topics....

Heya @Whiskey26 and a big welcome to the community!  How are you on this slightly wet day?

If you want to just have a chat and get to know everyone, I highly recommend The Coffee Lounge section. That's where we all chat about our favorite shows and many other hobbies. :)

Are you watching anything exciting at the moment?

Hi @Albus_Scope I'm very good thank you. Not wet here in Yorkshire, but there's definitely an autumn feel in the air. What am I watching at the moment 🤔....Big Brother, Married at First Sight and as a complete contrast, I love watching Gardeners World, any programme to do with travel or property and any police documentaries. Quite a mix!!!

    Hello @Whiskey26

Welcome to the community! :) We have a thread called Share your garden in our Coffee Lounge that I think you'd like :) I also love police and crime docuseries. Have you watched any good ones recently?

Hi Hannah_Scope thanks for that, I'll take a look! I'm currently watching the two part documentary, I think it's on Netflix, about the killing of Jill Dando. If you're young, you won't maybe know her name? She was a newsreader/Crimewatch presenter who was shot dead on her doorstep in the 90s. The police series I'm also watching is called Crash Detectives. It's on at the moment, though I'm not sure which day or channel.

@Whiskey26 I have the Jill Dando series on my Netflix list, waiting on my mum to finish her series as she'd like to sit and watch it too. I'll check out crash detectives! I'm always interested in the forensic side of crimes :)

@Hannah_Scope, I've just checked and Crash Detectives is only a four part series. Episode 2, is this coming Monday at 7pm on BBC2. I'm sure episode 1 should be on iPlayer or available to download.

@Hannah_Scope I'm looking forward to watching the Jill Dando prog too. She was such a lovely person. So sad.

Thank you! :) It is so sad. I do always feel in two minds about true crime dramas because I so feel for the victims family and friends. But the other side is almost self preservation to what is out there.

It's scary what (or who) is out there. No one is safe any more. Did you see the James Bulger documentary about the court heating? 😢

Not about the court hearing. I have heard about the one coming up in November. I studied Criminology and Psychology at University and one of our cases used was James Bulger when it came to crimes committed by children. It is so sad, his poor parents 😔

Ooh I've not heard about that one. I'm sure you'll be able to find the trial one to download somewhere? Very interesting. Those vile boys treating a defenceless baby like that. In my opinion they should never have been released. I honestly do not know how that poor little boys parents carry on living. Poor souls.

The trial was on Channel 5 if that helps?

@Whiskey26 I will see if it's on My5, thank you! I'm hoping they have all the support for this new trial in November! it's behind closed doors. In my opinion, that protection has been exhausted enough for him. Should be public but then will it cost someone else's life because of vigilantism?

@Whiskey26 Venables has been granted a parole hearing for release from prison in November.

Oh dear, that's not good is it? Neither of them should ever walk the streets again in my opinion. The whole of Liverpool will be out in force protesting when that day comes.

@Whiskey26 I think they are in court to make this hearing public now that UK courts can be televised. Going to be interesting to say the least! I do wonder if successful they would be able to televise it because of Venables new identity?

I very much doubt they'll televise it for that very reason. He's been given lifelong anonymity. I think if his identity was shown, there would be vigilantes waiting outside the courtroom for him!! All these years later and he's still as vile as when he was first put away. You said your degree was in Criminology. I bet you studied some interesting, but upsetting cases. Did your dissertation involve a famous crime, or was it more to do with Psychology?

@Whiskey26 I think they are going to court to get that anonymity lifted too. Or they possibly already have? I'll have to check up on that one.

We didn't really study full cases but they could be tough. We mainly used them as examples. Jack The Ripper as an example of changes in policing procedures was really interesting.

My dissertation was about the desensitization with gaming. The idea the media push about gaming, music and horror movies making you more likely to commit crimes being scaremongering. And actually, the lack of emotional response from gaming characters in some games, effecting the emotional response of addicted (40+ hours a week) gamers in social settings.
