    Hi I was granted ill health retirement when I was age 55, the highest tier.

    I am in receipt of pip, contribution based esa and industrial injury benefit.

    When I was granted ill health retirement I was informed that if I took paid employment my pension would be reduced to the lowest level so I have not worked since but in any case my health conditions and disability would make it impossible.

    That is only if you are re-employed in another position that pays civil service pensions !!

    Yes that's right, they clarify the possible implications if I returned to the civil service and confirm there is no impact if I took up other employment. Thought it would be useful to update you on the response to my question.

    Hi,

    I take it you were given lower tier IHR and not the top highest tier as there are very defined differences regarding what is permissible or not with regards employment, within the civil service or not.

    I also retired from the civil service on medical grounds, I got all the information I needed from our welfare officer and staff section.

    That was quite a few years ago now though but they should still be able to help you.

    Also my union rep helped a lot.

    Also have you joined the civil service pension portal, there should be information on there on the pension rules.

    It's all online.

    Yes I got the lower tier pension. To be honest I don't think I'll work again but at least I know where I stand. Thank you everyone for your help.

    I was retired due to ill health last year on the top tier but as I was off sick for so long I have not worked for a few years now. I emails MyCSP this week to see wha the official answer is. It took a lot as you all know to get the pension and I don’t want to loose it but my Doc said I need to find purpose again. I was told I can do another job as long as it is not similar to the once I already have. Desk job basically.

    The advice from your Doctor is wrong and could lead to severe penalties from your pension provider, even as you suggest…doing a desk job

    I have found that GP’s and other medical professionals are not fully understanding of the ins and outs of workplace pensions and the specific definitions within those policies and I would urge caution in believing everything they suggest.

    If you have been awarded the top or higher tier award then there are very specific restrictions on what it is you can do and I would urge you to look very closely at the wording in relation to future employment.

    To even get the higher award you must have submitted enough evidence to them in order for them too have judged you application and this will be on the acceptance that you are permanently incapable of working in any kind of GAINFUL employment, not just in your current role or position……This is the whole definition of the top tier award.

    Thanks son much for all that info. I will wait for MyCSP to get back to me as I defiantly do not want to break any rules. I will also pop an email to my union and get their views.

    I want them to give it to me 100% in what I can and cannot do. To be honest I don’t think I could ever handle a full time position but to get out of the house once or twice a week could be beneficial.
