Hi everyone, I received my PIP award letter and note that I will get free car tax. Does anyone know what I have to do to get it?

Thanks in advance,

I think I had to register the car with them, then they send a letter that you take to the post office and they stamp it. After the first time, when you get the annual renewal, as long as you have the same car (and still get PIP) you can renew the tax for free online.

If it’s Enhanced mobility you have there’s information here about what you need to take with you. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/65705f777391350013b03bc9/ins216-how-to-apply-for-free-disabled-tax.pdf
Please be aware that the vehicle must only be used for the purpose of the disabled person.

When you get your PIP letter there should be another piece of paper which you need to take to the post office for them to stamp it then it will automatically renew each year as disabled tax. Hope this helps

if your on enhanced rate you need a certificate of entitlement the post office don’t accept anything but the certificate of entitlement , last two times I have had my new award letter I haven’t received they actual certificate of entitlement I’ve had to call the Pip to send it out a lady told me you have to request it now but not sure I did mine this year online via tax renewal on dvla as I didn’t have the certificate to take to post office and it all went through ok

I don’t know much sorry this is just my experience

    Hi Happydays62

It's easiest to do a mission to your nearest Post Office in order to register your car for disabled tax.

It isn't difficult and if you can't get to your Post Office it can be done but it's subtle.

Once you do that it will be assumed on your tax registration form.

You're registering the car as for use by a person with a disability and that will need to be changed if it's used by others.

It doesn't need to be difficult.

    Good luck

To get car tax you pay for it in full write a letter and send in your pip award with mot and tax form and insurance photocopy and takes about 8 weeks

Thats not right, you take your "certificate of entitlement" to the post office and they will change the vehicle taxation class of the vehicle to disabled. You also can get a refund for the months of car tax you have paid if the entitlement notice is backdated (I claimed back 5 months worth)

Poppy is right, firstly you have to be on enhanced rate Mobility to claim free Tax, 2. In you doc's the last page of the entitlement letter is the certificate of entitlement with the start date and end date of the certificate. ( The reason I state this is that people have different lengths of mobility entitlement, so where one person may have a 1 year life, others have 3 or 5 years, but like me others had a 10 year never to be assessed again so mine is till 2029 December)

It must have a minimum of 1 year as the post office will not accept it.

    3. The car must be registered in the disabled person's name.

    4. The insurance must have the Disabled person on the certificate of insurance and if anyone else is using the vehicle, ( to commute with you or take you shopping they must also be on the certificate.)

    5. A V62 form is used to:- Change the ownership of the vehicle (when bought) and change the Taxation Class from Private Light Goods to Disabled Tax. (most forms hold a £25 fee, but NO fee is required when changing to Disabled Tax.

It sounds a lot but it's pretty painless and can be done over the counter at most main Post offices.

Lot of wrong information on here.

    1. Vehicle may be used by anyone with the owners consent not "only disabled person".
    2. Disabled person does NOT ned to be on insurance certificate (think children, non drivers, care home vehicles).
    3. Insurance law has NO effect on changing vehicle taxation class to "disabled" - All you need is your (higher level) PIP award.
    4. Car does not have to be "registered" in disabled persons name - V5 shows the keeper of the vehicle not the disabled person - (again think children etc.)
    5. There is no longer a lifetime award, all of us on these have been changed to (in my case) 10 years - others may be shorter depending on age. Attempting to use an old lifetime award letter will result in refusal as letter must be issued within last 12 months.(Phone call will get you a new letter).
    6. You cannot change vehicle taxation class at a post offive. Only at a DVLA office or by post to DVLA, renewals may however be completed on line or at a post office.
    7. Be aware you still have to tax the vehicle every year-but it will be for £0.00 - if you do not you can be prosecuted for failure to tax a vehicle.
    8. Once changed you must inform your insurance company of the change of status (in theory this does not matter, in practice be prepared to pay more !!)

Wow! Thank you so much to everyone who has commented. This is really helpful and informative. I do have the certificate and enhanced mobility award for 4 years. I'll write to the DVLA and take it from there.

Thank you to everyone who has kindly responded to my question, it means a lot.

@onebigvoice the disabled person doesn’t need to be on the vehicle insurance if they are not a driver of that vehicle.

@jae377 to change the taxation class you need to take documents to your local post office. They will then send them to DVLA. You can’t send documents straight to DVLA. Please see link I provided.

Thank you @poppy123456 I have just been looking online, which is a minefield of misinformation! I now know that you have to go to a post office with the exemption certificate, MOT and log book to get the vehicle's tax class changed to disabled. After doing this the first time, you can renew online each year until the certificate runs out. DVLA will automatically send a refund for any tax paid after the initial date of exemption.

Annoyingly, you can't do it online in the first instance, which is just wrong if you can't get to a PO. Luckily my husband can do this for me otherwise the certificate isn't worth the paper it's written on…

I should have just looked at your link (which I missed)! Doh! 😂 xx

I did EXACTLY this last year when I got my ADP entitlement letter. I did it AFTER phoning the DVLA who were the ones who told me which form to get and what to take. Only certain post offices can do it and iirc the post office website will tell you.

Lady at the post office was quick efficient and explained what would happen next.

That first link says the following..

You’ll usually be able to change tax class at a Post Office, but in some cases you may need to apply by post.

When you can change tax class at a Post Office

You can change your vehicle’s tax class at a Post Office that deals with vehicle tax if either:

    • the vehicle tax is due to run out (you’ve had a reminder or ‘last chance’ warning letter)
    • you’re changing whether a vehicle is exempt from vehicle tax or not, for example, it’s being used by a disabled person

When you need to change tax class by post

You need to apply by post to change tax class if any of the following are true:

    • you’ve changed what the vehicle is used for, for example starting to use a minibus for profit
    • you’ve changed the vehicle’s body type, for example converting a car into a light goods vehicle
    • you’ve changed the structure of the vehicle, for example converting a four-wheel car into a three-wheel car

That tells me that for free vehicle tax, it needs to be at a post office. For those with standard mobility PIP or ADP this needs to be claimed by post only and not at a post office.

    Thank you Poppy 123456,

I order to claim the free Road Tax the Disabled person on the Exemption certificate, needs to be the owner of the vehicle and have a Valid Certificate of insurance for the same vehicle.

This then holds no Fee for the V62 and the change of Taxation Class to Disabled Tax.

If the Disabled person wants to "Use" someone else's car then inorder to use that car and get free road tax they still have to have insurance for that car and a letter changing ownership to them for the period of use. You are unable to claim free road tax if the Disabled person is not using it or, that the car, is not being used for the purpose of Appointments, shopping while they need it, or as a carer.

If any one uses the car for anything else the Tax and insurance are void. You have to stipulate that the main user is the disabled driver/passenger. The same rules apply for the use of the Blue Badge. If the Disabled person is not in the vehicle and is parked in the Disabled bay and you are asked to show your blue badge( as they do in Cardiff) they can confiscate it and you will be fined and stopped for applying for another for I believe 6 months (don't quote me on that) unless you can prove it was used without your concent, but that just increases the fine for the illegal user. (or if it has been stolen from your car, in which case you would have previously reported it stolen, and would require an incident number, as people who have been caught, the badge owner when challenged, say, yes it was stolen last week.) Both of these will still be fined since it break's the rules of the Blue Badge Scheme for disabled users.

@onebigvoice you are not correct. To be clear the disabled person does not need to be the owner or registered keeper of the vehicle.

The vehicle can be registered in the nominated drivers name. Please see link I posted above. The disabled person doesn’t need an insurance certificate with their name on it if they do not drive.

Blue badges are irrelevant here anyway because the thread is about vehicle tax.

I EXPLICITITLY stated a DVLA office - at no point did I suggest or state sending them direct to the DVLA. I however stand corrected that DVLA Offices have now been abolished (its years since I needed to change my class) so Post Offices do indeed carry out this function.
