Advice on Carers Allowance

I’m on Contribution ESA support group, and enhanced daily, standard mobility on PIP,

My husband has just returned to work full time due to cost of living, since he has returned I’ve had several accidents in the home trying to do the things he normally did.

My sister retired from work early at the age of 63, but was looking for part time work just to keep her from getting bored, she’s been a god send the last 6 months coming over every day doing the jobs I struggled with taking me to appointments, shopping etc, I suggested she might as well claim carers allowance to be honest she probably does more than 35 hours bless her.

My sister does not claim any benefits but does get a work pension of around £380 month, she is married and her husband has a fairly good wage, if my sister claims carers allowance will she be taxed on her work pension? Or will the carers allowance be taxed? We are unsure how it works, will it affect my benefits in anyway.

Also when applying on line they ask about my sister partner, not that it’s a problem but her husband didn’t seem to happy they wanted his details when he’s not claiming it.

Kind regards Dee

I see from a previous thread that you were claiming Universal Credit, that included carers element for your partner. Are you still claiming this?

If you are then your sister would not be able to claim carers allowance at the same time as your partner claiming carers element.

Thank you. Then your sister claiming carers allowance will not affect any of your benefits.

Yes her pension and carers allowance are both taxable income. As the personal allowance is £12,570/year then your sister would be below that based on CA and her pension income so no tax would be payable.

The carers allowance can be backdated for up to 3 months, if she was caring for you at that time. Providing your partner wasn’t claiming carers element of UC at that time.

we have 4 nil payments as my husband has been full time for 4 months I believe this will close the UC account when it reaches 6 nil payments automatically, so the account is still open but no payment received, if that makes sense, if my sister claims carers allowance do we need to close the UC account

    kind regards Dee

That means it’s included in the calculation. I don’t know if that would affect her claiming CA now. If there’s no changes expected in his earnings then yes you could go ahead and close the claim.
