My wife had mobility issues several years ago and, eventually, was awarded the Highest Mobility Rate. She’s now aged 79 and started with some short term memory issues. After a great deal of persuasion she agreed to go through the Memory Assessment Clinic.

Very sadly they’ve now come back with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Dementia which has shown up as Atrophy on the brain scan.

We’re obviously devastated by this in addition to my own problems (Triple Bypass, Mitral Valve Repair - Now Heart Failure Diagnosis together with Severe Spinal Stenosis).

When I spoke to someone at the Local Authority and they said that with my wife’s diagnosis we may qualify for a Council Tax Reduction. On speaking they said that if my wife had the Care Part of DLA we would qualify?

On speaking to the DWP they said we would have to put a claim in for the Care part but they would also at the same time review the original Mobility part. This was awarded for an indefinite period.

We’re concerned about this as we hear so much about people being refused the new equivalent PIP?

Do forum members think we’re worrying for nothing or should we be cautious.

Thanks for any advice or guidance.

Kind regards

David

Yes, if you went ahead with this then they will look at the whole award again and not just part of it. If the worst happened at their mobility award was either reduced or stopped completely then you would be able to challenge the decision.

    Thanks for your reply Poppy.

It’s a difficult decision because we both have a lot to cope with and I’m really not sure if it would be worth the additional stress that this might cause.

We have a Disability Advice Service locally who have been very good in other matters so I think it maybe useful to also ask their opinion.

    Thanks again.

    Kind regards
