When does your husband reach state pension age? Does your husband claim a disability benefit such as PIP daily living, DLA mid/high rate care or Attendance Allowance?
Do you live with any other adults?

hi Poppy 123456
My husband reaches his pension in April. He doesn’t claim any other benefits we are above the limit for pension credit. The dwp has said he continues to meet the criteria for entitlement to carers allowance for me but as he is getting his state pension from April they cannot pay carers allowance. It states because he is entitled to carers allowance even though he can’t claim it it can help with other benefits such as Pension credit or carers addition or carers premium on top of these benefits. They have advised him to contact the pension service to see if he can get pension credit with the carers addition or we have previously looked online at pension credit and we are not eligible. Thank you

It’s only January so unless he works and earns more then £151/week there’s absolutely no reason why he can’t claim carers allowance for looking after you until he reaches state pension age in April. Once he reaches this age if his state pension is more than the carers allowance then he will not receive any money for carers allowance.
At the moment because you are know as a mixed aged couple you will not be able to claim Pension Credit. The only other benefit that maybe possible is Universal Credit. As this is a means tested benefit you will need to claim as a couple. Your state pension will be deducted in full from any UC entitlement. If you have capital of more than £16,000 you’re excluded from claiming.
Once you both reach state pension whether there’s any entitlement to pension credit will depend on your circumstances. Your husband will have an underlying entitlement to carers allowance which would increase your pension credit entitlement due to carers premium being added. Although this doesn’t mean there’s a guaranteed entitlement. You can use a benefits calculator to check entitlement to pension credit but make sure you also put that he’s already state pension age, otherwise it will not complete the calculation.
