Benefit help
hi
could someone please help with advice as it’s a minefield when trying to find out non dependents deductions..
I currently live alone and claim UC council tax benefit and work capability element
my 16 year old son and his pregnant girlfriend want to move in with me due to unforeseen circumstances. He works but earns under £12500 a year and she is on UC with some other benefits too.
Question is will I loose any money having them live with me and will she loose any money too
many thanks

Council Tax benefit is decided on at a local level, so it's impossible for us to advise on from here unfortunately.
If they are both under 18 then you won't lose Single Person Discount.
Your UC shouldn't be effected.
As your son is 16 and gf presumably a similar age, no non dependant deductions will be made to your Housing Element, if you claim that.
People under 21 who live with you aren't considered non dependants for HE purposes.
Your son and girlfriend will need to claim UC as a couple once they live together. Any entitlement is based on their joint circumstances.
There are only certain circumstances a 16yo can claim UC so I'm not actually sure how that will work in practice before the baby is born

thankyou
I think I understand
she is 18 will this matter much if she’s claiming already and I think I will loose the single person council tax deduction so does this mean I’ll still be able to claim the rest but will have to pay the 25% each year? Thanks

Yes as she is 18 you'll lose the single person discount bringing your liability from 75% to 100%, before any Council Tax Reduction.
As I said CTR is decided on at a local level, so we can't advise on individual cases from here.
You'll need to contact your local authority, they may have a calculator on their website.
She would need to tell UC she now lives with a partner, but as he is 16 I'm not sure how that will effect her entitlement until the baby is born.
After the baby is born, he is eligible to claim and any entitlement will be based on their joint circumstances as a couple.

One of the exceptions to being able to claim UC is living with a partner who is eligible so there shouldn't be an issue him claiming it. Whether there's any entitlement before the baby is born because he's working will depend on their joint circumstances.
What other benefits is she claiming?

Hello @pjsparkx
Just wanted to say welcome to the community. It's lovely to hear you are trying to help your son and his girlfriend at what seems a challenging time for them, especially with a baby on the way.
The community can be a great support, and the members are full of knowledge. There is so much information online, it can often feel overwhelming and difficult to find the right advice. @Kimmy87 and @poppy123456 have given some good information, I agree you should seek advice from your local authority as they can give individualized advice to you all.
You may find your local Citizens Advice helpful too.
Please keep reaching out to the community for further support.
