Accessibility Project

I'm currently working on a project for college, looking at accessibility in clothing for disabled individuals and their carers. I'm going to post my proposal and a link to an online survey. It would mean a lot if some of you were able to fill it out to aid my research. I plan on working on this project further than college in the hopes of creating a new business idea.

My theme for this project is aimed at children with disabilities, focusing on the 6-15 age group. A lot of accessibility wear is aimed at young kids (0 month – 2 years) while they are in NICU, and older people, who are partially abled, in wheelchairs. This means a lot as my brother is disabled and struggles having clothing, he likes, that fits him properly. We complain often about how hard it is to dress him, as he’s paralysed and trying to adjust his body to get into clothing is hard. My audience is, technically speaking, aimed for the carers or parents of these children- trying to give them an easier time dressing the wearer. My proposed outcome will most likely be a garment, designed in a way that is aimed for children with impaired vision and ‘child-like’ interests, that has an extra function making it easy to dress someone who has limited movement in. I will research already existing adaptive brands, children’s brands, issues faced with clothing, and lack of availability. I anticipate using a lot of materials like eyelets, hooks, magnets, zippers and more. This will aid my development as I will gather an idea of how to move forward style wise, and accessibility wise.
