'Exorcism' victim Wins Compensation

And this is the 21st century folks - An 'exorcism'?

I knew zealots undertake 'Pray The Gay Away' on behalf of their loved ones, and/or force their loved ones into 'Conversion Therapy'. But, that's new - exorcism.
I'm biased because I've always believed there's very, very little good that comes from public/perfomative religion.
Personal, reflective religion is a different beast, I believe.

All a load of cobblers, but that's only a personal view!
I was forced to attend church until the age of 15. Bitter? Not much!

The Guardian is reporting a story from The Times? Slow news day!
I suppose that could be worse.
Apparently "Each diocese has at least one clergy member trained in both exorcism and psychiatry to assist with such matters." I'm curious where psychology and exorcists find shared opinions. I've never seen it.
Some of the most beautiful people I've met were/are very religious. At Newcastle Cathedral each Sunday we (the choirboys) had all afternoon to fill between morning and evening masses. The provost often helped us learn the power of peace. It was a great thing to do and be part of.
The "Current beliefs and practices" part of this article demonstrates well how the various branches of all religions struggle to agree with one another:

Whisky or cognac are the only spirits I believe in!
My mother is very religious, but pretty much none of the rest of my family attend church.
I've told my mum to stop lighting all those candles for me, as they clearly aren't helping!

I am wondering why this man attended this event and how an "exorcism" came to be offered. Very strange and no doubt scary for him too.

I believe the lad in question was under their spell at the time, but later shook the nonsense off.

Ranald, it is simplistic to label all religion as harmful. For a start, the idea of the right to life and the equal value of the disabled to able bodied was a consequence of the Christian faith supplanting the pagan values of Rome and its empire. Unwanted children were routinely exposed ie left to die in the street ………vs the Christian concept of each person having a unique and precious value. This is easily verifiable in history accounts.
Of course it was not always lived out. The paedophile priests, ministers and laymen coverup in particular was inexcusable. But the vast majority of believers try to live kind lives, even if it means struggling with failure at times. The secular world likes to point fingers and write people off when they fail in virtue or self control. The Christian faith emphasises forgiveness, repentence and trying again and again to do better.
Many addicts rely on their faith to give strength to overcome their problems…AA was founded by RC members, for example.
Best wishes

I didn't mention religion being harmful, that was another member; I referred to 'a load of cobblers'.

No big deal! I probably shouldn't call organised religion names lol.

To: Ranald
Hey, we are free to think and say what we like, hopefully though not being deliberately unkind….!
By the way, I think religion is described as "organised" if it holds regular meetings and has appointed officers, but noone within the churches describes them as organised! Christian faith took this form when it was no longer possible to meet in small homes due to the expansion of numbers and the need for a supportive community to belong to and to be accountable to.
Apologies if you already knew this!
Best wishes

What a well reasoned and well thought out way to stereotype an entire group!
Maybe grow the hell up and stop judging everyone the same.
For the record, yes I am Christian (CofE) but I don't think or feel that way. I'm a metalhead who swears his head off and covered in tattoos and piercings.
Imagine if I came out with the same childish drivel -
All disabled people are...
All women are…
FFS, it's fine to have an opinion but to be so rude about it is just wrong.

In the first series of Last of the Summer Wine, Compo stubbed his cigarette out on the floor of the church. Blamire scolded him that he was on consecrated ground, but Compo shrugged, saying he was wearing rubber soles!

I have been a member here for a few years now, and I have always found the religious threads that appear occasionally to be engaging and genuinely insightful. Someone else’s faith has never felt like a threat to my own views, and I don’t see why it should. It’s always interesting to hear another perspective.
Belief doesn’t require agreement, just a basic respect for difference. What has surfaced in this thread isn’t disagreement. It’s derision. A handful of replies haven’t just dismissed belief they have taken pride in belittling it, with no thought for those reading who may hold religious affiliations, not only to Christianity but across all faiths.
It isn’t religion that causes the problems, it’s the refusal to respect any viewpoint beyond your own. The irony? Those most eager to mock belief often treat their own certainty like gospel, minus the humility, plus the sermon.
