University in September BUT no social care in place

Hi there,

I'm due to start university in September. I've been on the waiting list for a social care need assessment for a year now with no sign of reaching the top of their list.

I'm unsure what to do. If I defer I'm stuck in my parents home where I have no independence, struggle with the stairs, live in a very rural area with no public transport so I have to rely on them for everything. I'm 22, I need to have a life outside of my bedroom.

I do get PIP fortunately but I'm unsure how I'd go about hiring a carer using that money.

Any advice would be must appreciated!

Thank you :)

hi there and welcome to the forum unfortunately I don't know a great deal about this subject is there anyway you can stay at home for university because I know that can sometimes be the best option because you won't have to worry about getting social care?

another thing I would recommend is I recommend the coffee lounge for a general chat or the games den for some fun

Unfortunately no, I need to get out of my rural home because I have no life or independence stuck in my room :/

No worries for not knowing! I appreciate your response

    Hi @Luan353

I understand how you feel, going to University was a big deal to me and my independence as well! What are you hoping to study?😄

Have you had a chance to speak with your Uni’s disability or student support team yet? Most universities have services that can help disabled students with accessible accommodation, settling in etc. They may even be able contact social care on your behalf. It may be worth contacting them even if you’re not officially enrolled as they still may be able to answer any questions you have about what they can offer before making your decision.

You can use pip to hire a carer while you do wait for the assessment and here is some information on employing personal assistants, care workers and support workers which I hope will be helpful!

It’s also worth chasing your local authority again as letting them know your situation is changing and now you need urgent support to live independently while studying. There is also the Disabled Students Helpline which are good to contact if you have any issues around education and may be able to provide more specific advice and information.

Even if you do end up having to defer for a year, that’s okay. I know it may not ideal but it might be worth starting university when you have the peace of mind that everything is properly in place and you're fully supported.
