I don't believe messages wouldn't be suitable as it is a formal telephone interview.
You can make a complaint if you want to

hi I have a friend who is on universal credit. He said the out of the blue they have requested 3 months worth of bank statements and provided a date range. He said that apparently if they see you are shopping at say Tesco, that this will trigger them to investigate how you can do shopping if you have problems walking? They want to know about all transactions on your bank statements. It appears to me that they are trying to catch you out at every opportunity. I requested my records recently which happened to include details of my pip assessment. It was stated that because I was able to stand up and get my tablets that I was clearly able to manage getting about. This is simply not true. I have stenosis of my lumbar region along with enlarged facet joints, as well as them impinging nerves and osteoarthritis. I have a prolapsed disc in my neck and a slightly bulging disc in my lower spine. I also have a plantar fibroma on the bottom of my foot. In my hips I have spurs which are again impinging nerves. So my friend saying that UC is checking bank statements and questioning why you are paying certain businesses and questioning how you can do shopping etc really concerns me. Then reading that DWP can take money straight from your bank account if they feel you have been overpaid etc. I have more than enough years of full national insurance having been paid to ensure I will receive a full state pension. However I am unable to claim state pension until 2029. I am constantly worried about having through assessments etc. Do other people feel like this? How do some people stay calm and take this in their stride? Will my age and my working history be taken into consideration?

The Universal Credit reviews are financial only.
Yes they do question transactions, I hated my review but had to go through it as a condition of receiving UC.
This thread has some information about these checks.

Hi @westpest, Sorry you're feeling so stressed out by it all, it's a confusing and worrying system sometimes.
Kimi's link has some useful information about bank reviews for UC. These are fairly standard and while there are some difficult storires, lots of people find it easier than they thought they would. Are you claiming UC yourself?
They do sometimes ask questions relating to your health to check that you're in the right group and that things haven't changed for the better since you were last assessed. The majority of people I've seen posting about their reviews have remained in the same group and haven't faced reassessment.
From what I understand, the bank account recovery system is only meant to be used as a last resort for more extreme cases like fraudulent claims. DWP won't routinely remove money from your bank account out of nowhere. If they find that you have been overpaid at any point, especially if it's been an honest mistake, they will usually contact you for a repayment plan first.
It's tough not to feel worried about reassessments when you've had some bad experiences before. But there's lots of help out there if anything does happen. Places like this community and professional benefits advisers are there to help if you're feeling worried by anything happening with your benefits ☺️
