What do you like to do when it is sunny?

Finally, the sun has decided to make an appearance!

The sunny weather can be a great chance to get outside, have some fresh air and take part in activities that are harder in colder weather.

Here are some top tips for staying healthy this summer:

  • Use suncream daily: Suncream helps prevent skin cancer and has been proven to help slow down your skin's ageing process.

  • Hydrate: Water prevents dehydration and replaces minerals that are lost in the summer sun. It is recommended that for every hour in the sun you drink at least one or two glasses.

  • Eat breakfast: Eating breakfast starts the day right and lowers the fainting risk when out in the sun.
We also have a post on the importance of sunglasses

What is your favourite summer activity? How do you ensure you stay health? Let us know in the comments below!

Although they are few and far between in Scotland, we do get some sunny days here and finally have one today.   When the sun comes out I like to get out in my mobility scooter and have a wee run down by the riverbank near to where we live and just sit for a while and read a book.  I find that really relaxing.  Also some weekends I like to go out in the car with my husband and head to the countryside or beach and take a picnic.  I like to stay healthy in the heat by drinking plenty of juice (not a fan of water, I'm afraid, sorry) and putting plenty of suncream on so the above tips are really good, thanks.  Enjoy the sun!

It's been sunny and warm here in my part of the world. I love sitting outside until I see a spider...erk!

I'm reading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.  It's really good, but I am taking ages to read it as I keep finding other things to do first!  Yes, my day has been not bad, thanks, @Chloe_Scope.  Just did a bit of housework today and sat in the garden for a wee while, but it was starting to get a bit windy so came in.   I hope your day has been good and you are enjoying the sun.

If it was up to me I’d be the same as you @debbiedo49!
However, I inevitably succumb to pressure and so it’s lots of picnics, trips to the park and skimming stones by the river for me and the family. Nothing fancy, but I keep telling myself it doesn’t need to be. :D The kids don’t tire of getting outside and it’s something we can do without too much planning or forethought.
Ideally I’d still be inside with the fan on, a cold glass of something in my hand and a pair of sunglasses on my face to save me from the hay fever.

Sounds like a really interesting book @Ails! I did thank you, we had a BBQ with the family which was lovely :)

@debbiedo49, I can never last long in the sun!! If it's outside it's under a parasol before having to return inside! Like @Adrian_Scope said, a fan and a cold drink is always very tempting!

@ Chloe-Scope, I like to be out in the sunshine, but as I have MS I mustn’t get hot, therefore sea breezes are best for me! Sitting in the garden is only possible mornings and evenings, however these are the most popular times for birds to come to our feeders and they are a delight to watch.

Hi @jolew, I can understand that one though! That sounds so peaceful though! Makes me want to go out and sit in my garden. :) We have a big bird table, but unfortunately the dogs can sometimes scare them away!

Hi @Chloe_Scope , We have only put bird feeders out since our cat 🐈 passed away, as he was a good hunter even although he had lost all his teeth! 😂
  • AilsAils Member Posts: 2,268 Disability Gamechanger
Hi @jolew, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your cat.  That is so sad.   I have a cat too and would be so upset if I lost her.  Glad you are enjoying mornings and evenings in the sun in your garden.

Thanks @Ails, We are very sad to have lost Whiskey he was a real character. He was 15yrs old and we got him when he was 5 months old, so he was very much part of the family. My husband chose him and Susie, his sister, at the RSPC centre when I was in hospital having my first op. He wanted me to have the company during my recovery. Unfortunately we no longer have Susie either.
Even although I can’t enjoy the full sun,  it is lovely to have this beautiful weather and to enjoy what I can of it. I hope you are enjoying it too!

I like to go for short walks.  I’m currently 3 months pregnant so anything too vigorous is not a option. I may go for a swim tomorrow.

Hi @jolew, cat's are very good at that one... even without teeth!  :D I imagine they were a big part of the family, it's great that you are able to enjoy the bits that you can :)

I wanted to do that yesterday @GettinOldeB)

Hi @jolew, Whiskey and Susie are lovely names for cats.  My cat is a rescue cat too.  Rescue pets are great, aren't they?  Glad you can enjoy the lovely weather when you can.  Yes, when we get the sun here I enjoy sitting out in it too.

There's a small jet black cat with a missing eye oozing puss, I believe it's feral/stray. The RSPCA says it's the estate landlord's job to deal with it, but they won't. Seems I'll need to get in touch with some other local animal rescue centre - even our local Cat's & Dog's home just refer to the RSPCA. 😡

I like to read, listen to music, have something cool like an ice-pop or sorbet. Really enjoying this sunny weather.

Sunny days are worse for me than cooler ones, the heat causes the pain to get worse. Being housebound and virtually chair bound to a recliner just makes sunny days miserable. It isn't just the pain though as if I was in appropriate accommodation I could at least go outside in a wheelchair but I cannot get any support from the local health and support services. I did hope to move into a better area but that was killed off by incompetent GP's and equally incompetent Social Services. Just waiting now for the soon to happen day when I can't leave the chair at all and will starve to death.

I love the hot weather. Though previously i would go out walking or even a drive to local beaches, due to my illness i cannot walk far or even drive to beaches. I suffer with multi level ddd. Which has and still is causing problems with my arms and left leg. Vision sometimes blurrs in my left eye.
So my enjoyment is now confined to getting to garden to enjoy it.

@emmarenshaw, I am with you there, you sound like you have it all sorted!!
@Topkitten, I can understand you not enjoying the sun if it impacts on your health, hows the rainy weather for you?
@steve23965, I hope your garden is a nice and relaxing place for you! I do love sitting outside when I can :)

@Chloe_Scope, only hot weather causes problems which I assume is due to sweating. Contact with the nerve damaged areas is extremely painful so I always try to wear clothes that don't touch the skin. So far its mostly the lower right leg but every couple of months it changes and expands, wont be long before it's both legs. I usually spend all day in a dressing gown though if it gets too hot I have to change into shorts.

I was going to put a lengthy reply but perhaps it's better elsewhere. All I will say @Chloe_Scope is that every day is as painful as the previous day except when my condition gets worse and then my only hope is that the pain won't go up too much this time. Next change is due in the next week or so.

    @Topkitten

Sorry to hear that. If you ever need to talk I’m here. What pain medication are you on? Are you seeing a pain management specialist or not? Pain sucks. I have had terrible neuropathic pain in the past so I can understand what you are feeling now. Please also consider seeing a therapist. What did the doctor say? My pain specialist referred me to art therapy which helped me immensely. It distracted me temporarily. I was 11 years old at the time of diagnosis. Eventually the symptoms disappeared although now I think they are back. I stopped my pain meds.
Perhaps that is a option to try too? It is worth a shot. How bad is the pain now?
  • TopkittenTopkitten Member Posts: 1,263 Pioneering
@April2018mom, ty for your comments. Pain levels are high constantly due to nerve damage and reclined in a chair most of the time allows it to drop to 4/10 unless it's very warm when it goes to 5/10. Standing sends it up to 8/10 and walking just a few steps shoves it to the maximum (10/10). I used to be on Fentanyl patches but when I hit the guideline limit (125 microgrammes per hour and usually reserved for terminal Cancer patients) they refused to increase further and dropping behind caused overdose and withdrawal problems as my skin could overcome the limiting factor in the patches. Now I try to cope on Tramadil, Paracetamol, Pregabalin and Nortryptylene but unfortunately, even on a low dosage, I get regular problems with the Pregabalin and Nortryptylene so all they do is just take the edge off the pain and do not deal with the core problems. In the past I have been on both Buprenorphine and Fentanyl patches, Cocodamol, Dihydrocodeine, Oramorph, Duloxetine, Amitryptylene and Gebapentin but all have either been outstripped or caused problems. I can only really control the pain with my current medication if I stay in the recliner chair 23 hours a day or more.

I played football today. We are about to start rehearsals for our annual Christmas play in two weeks time. Parts will be given out tomorrow so everyone will have plenty of time to learn their words properly. I am beginning another search for a guitar teacher as well. I also want to start French lessons again.
