With gifts, the 7 year 'rule' doesn't necessarily apply if it wouldn't have any relevance for Inheritance Tax in the future, i.e. if the monies you gift + your estate don't exceed £325k (currently). I know because I told my children they'd really have to look after me for 7 years after I was going to give them some monies, then was advised by my solicitor that this didn't apply!
I 'think' they will still look after me tho, as I still have my uses.
