    Hi

No register Office won't have change of name deeds , the change of name is done through a solicitor

If your passport was issued in your previous name that would suggest your name hasn't been changed officially as your passport will be in the name you are officially known as

When was your passport issued ?

If your name hasn't been changed you can either use your birth name and show birth cert but don't know how you would go about your ni number and bank account not matching

You could also change your name officially

My passport was issued when I was around 8 years old I think.
Is there any way I can find out if my name was officially changed ?

    Thanks

If your mum dealt with that can't you ask her? If it was legally changed then she would have been given a deed poll. If it wasn't then she would have just "changed" your name. I changed my name back to my maiden name a very long time ago, which was done through a solicitor and i was given the deed poll, which was signed by myself and the solicitor.
If you have a bank account in the name you currently use then why can't you use this as ID... IE a bank statement. An out of date passport can't be used as ID anyway.

An employer will only accept birth cert or passport or change of name deed
    @poppy123456
Bank statement will not be accepted as they are trying to prove right to work in UK and bank statement does not prove your right to work

You will need both birth certificate and change of name deed

I suggest you discuss the issue with your mum as she is the only person who will know the details

Your birth certificate shows you were born in UK and change name deed explains the change of name from your birth name

I asked Mum but she really doesn't remember whether it was changed officially or not.
Mum  was married in 1997 which was when I also  took on his surname, so a long time ago.

As it stands my birth certificate and (absent/missing ) passport  is in one surname ( My mum's surname before she got married , I never took my biological dad's name ) ,   my bank account and national insurance number in another surname ( step dads surname ) and I have no evidence of a name change  here at home and no idea how to inquire whether it was officially changed or not and how to go about getting the document if it was.

I feel I do not know my own identity, it is very frustrating.

What would you guy's recommend the very first step I take to go about this ?

Any further help much appreciated .

If you have your birth cert or get a copy I would then get legal advice or speak to cab

You may have to do a change of name by deed poll if your birth cert is the only document you can access and you want to be known by your other name

If you want to be known by your birth name you will have to change your name at bank and ni and anywhere else your name is known differently

It's not going to be a quick fix I'm afraid

Does your mum not have somewhere she keeps all official documents you can have a look through

You need to take action because without doing something you won't be permitted to start work

The easiest document to prove right to work is a valid passport which you don't have next is birth certificate with proof of ni number

Often names don't match due to marriage,  change of name etc but that can be evidenced by certificate

I doubt this would be anything to do with a registry office, which is to do with registering births, deaths & marriages (& civil partnerships).
A name change can be made by deed poll if over 16 years of age. Please see: https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll which says,
'You do not have to follow a legal process to start using a new name. But you might need a ‘deed poll’ to apply for or to change official documents like your passport or driving licence.'
As Jane says, your Mum could have had your surname changed if you were under 18 at the time.

As @chiarieds states you can call yourself any name and don't have to change it legally

But when you apply for things like passports , driving licence etc you would have to use your birth name if you haven't changed it by deed poll

To change a child's name you need permission of anyone who has parental responsibility for that child eg named as parents on birth or adoption certificate unless the parental responsibility has been taken away through the court

Hi there Janer1967, thanks for this.

I will obtain a birth certificate and will try to speak with someone at CAB about this.
If I change my name by deed poll will the name on my birth certificate change to that of my step family surname ?
Also if I decide to put everything in my birth name such as bank account, national insurance etc, how long realistically should I expect that to take ?

Mum say's she has no record of this name change and cannot remember how it was went about with the name change whether it was  either officially or not.

If I could open a passport in step family surname  ( using bank account ) would that suffice to an employer or would it not be accepted with the birth certificate being under a different name than the passport ? ( if I can even apply for passport with a mix match in names )

thank you sincerely and I look forward to your reply if you'd be so kind

    Hey there Chiarieds

It seems that the registry office may not offer services regarding name changes, I could ask but from what I read it seems unlikely.
If I was to change by deed poll my name to that of my step family would the name of my birth certificate change from what I was born as to the name of my step dad surname ?

Also, if I want to put everything in the name on my birth certificate, bank account and national insurance, how long realistically could this take to change ?  thanks

No, it will stay the same as it is now. The deed poll will be proof that you've changed your name.

    Hi again

You will only get s passport in your birth name as you will need your birth certificate to prove your identity to obtain one and would need change name deed as well to get it in your name that you are using now

If you change back to your birth name you will need to contact your bank and anywhere else you are known in other name

I don't know how long any of the options would take

As this is quite complicated you need to seek expert advice which I hope cab would be able to assist

Hey Poppy, nice see you .

I like the idea of doing It that way then, rather than swapping name's over etc.

Is it quite a straight forward procedure to swap name via deed poll ?
Also do I need documents/evidence  to to change via deed  poll ?

Will it still be a problem that my birth certificate will be in a different name or not, because I will show name change documents ?

Thank you sincerely I look forward to your response if you'd be so kind

It's very straight forward. Mine was done by my solicitor but it was almost 20 years ago and because of a breakdown of a marriage.
No, it won't be a problem that your birth certificate is a different name because you will have your deed poll as proof your name has changed.
Google "change your name by deed poll" i can't put links because it's a paid service and these types of links are not allowed here.

It's very straightforward forward to change your name by deed poll

As poppy mine was done about 15 years ago and just involved going to solicitors where they asked few questions around previous names as I had been married twice etc they then produced the document

I had several copies so they could be used in future

There is a cost for changing your name it cost me £60 but as I said that was 15 years ago

Hey guy's, thanks for the swift replies and I  apologize for the delay.

I have recently  had appointments with vet's and dentists etc  and been a bit overwhelmed by everything.

I am glad to hear it is a straight forward procedure and I am going to go ahead and get my name changed by deed poll.
As I already have things in the name I am officially going to be known by I should be all sorted once it comes through in the post as my documents such as bank account and NI number are already in that name.

Is it useless be searching for a part time job at the moment without identification or could I still be hired ?
I want to do this while I am in the mindset, if I put it off until then I fear I may loser that determination and feel unable to try a part time job.

As always , Huge thanks and I look forward to any further correspondence
