I had my PIP telephone assessment
i was shocked when the assessor asked me if I’d ever felt suicidal if so how would of committed suicide and what stopped me
this has played on my mind since yesterday and caused me great distress 
I have no proof that this was asked as I didn’t record the assessment

Is this a routine question? It was horrible and brought up awful
memories of a dark place I was in 5 years ago

Hi,

This is all part of the safe guarding process so yes it's a question often asked to those that suffer with mental health. It would be terrible if they didn't ask that question and something happened to you after the assessment.

I know the assessment process causes a lot of people to be even more anxious, which again is perfectly normal.

Hi @Kitty07 as poppy has said, yes that question is part of the assessment.

It's used as part of the safeguarding process to make sure everyone involved in the managing the PIP application process can best support any applicant where needed. 

I can understand the distress it's caused due to past memories, as it can be triggering, and I am sorry to hear about that. Do you have anyone you could talk to for support with your mental health at the moment, such as your GP, or any specialists?

The mental health charity Mind have some helpful resources on things you can do to help calm feelings of panic, stress and anxiety so please do have a look if you'd like.
