Our study aims to explore the healthcare needs and experiences of autistic adults aged 50+ with and without intellectual disabilities. To our knowledge this is the first study to investigate what helps and hinders middle aged and older autistics adults from being able to access healthcare services within the UK. It is hoped that findings from this study will be published in peer reviewed journals and circulated across different settings to help reduce the health inequalities experienced by middle aged and older autistic adults.
This study has been provided with UCL ethical approval (2271/001), and all materials have been co-produced with an autistic older adult focus group from the National Autistic Society (NAS). The study will involve asking people who self-identify or have an official diagnosis of autism to complete a brief (30-45 minutes) online survey about physical and mental healthcare needs and experiences with services. This survey can be complete either anonymously, or people can provide their contact details if they would like to be entered into a prize draw for one of five £20 vouchers. Those who provide contact details will also be asked if they would like to take part in a second study element (a 45-60 minute Zoom interview about healthcare experiences), with everyone taking part in these interviews receiving a £15 voucher as a thank you for their time. We are also seeking to recruit carers of people with severe intellectual disabilities to take part in interviews.
