Relocating from Spain to England - Education Advice For 15 Year Old

Hi I'm a UK born parent of a UK born soon to be 15-year-old son Joe. He has exceptional needs - almost non-verbal ASD & needs constant care. We have been living in Spain for 12 years where we have found the schooling very disappointing. I've recently relocated to my native North Tyneside & we're exploring the possibility of him joining me. I realise that the process of obtaining a EHC plan can be lengthy & would need my son to be resident in the UK for most of the duration.

I'm wondering if anyone has any recent experience of this. Of course, Brexit may have caused additional obstacles here - he did have a UK passport as a young child so I might need to renew this (he also has a Spanish passport as his mother is Spanish).

Also I realise that we are going to have to translate aspects of the care plan from our Spanish education authority. Joe has been exposed to both Spanish & English but the limited communication system used so far has been in Spanish. Adding to the complications is that my wife & I have split up & so any move will mean a break from his mother & siblings.

He is over in the UK for the Easter period & the plan is to bring him over semi-permanently from June.

Any pointers would be greatly received.

Hi @SteveNug and a warm welcome to the community!

Unfortunately, I haven't come across this situation myself before but hopefully somebody else on the community will be able to share their experience soon if they have

If you haven't already then it is definitely worth contacting your local SENDIASS. These are impartial education specialists who are good to go to for education  information, support, questions around education/schooling.

There is also IPSEA who are the legal experts when it comes to education in England. They also have lots of resources on their website as well as a free helpline for information and advice.

I will also edit the title of this post and put a couple of tags in it just so it makes it easier for other members who may have gone through the same experience to find, hope thats okay!
