child to teens/young adults

My son is now 20 and we are beginning to notice the lack of help . He goes to college this will be his third year although he didn't attend for most of the last year because he didn't get on with the course . He has had a specialist chair all the way through school and college (Bambach). As he wasn't in attendance the chair has been sent back . I had a phone call on his first day back from college letting me know he no longer has the chair. I was asked to phone the company to get the chair back .So that's what I did . it wasn't as easy to just get the chair back I ended up going through the houses and was even asked to get college to speak to someone which was where it had started . I then had to call social care but as it was a Friday I would be better calling Monday . I never had all this with children services .

This may be slightly different, but our experience with our local mental health team has been awful compared with the children's service. They have a phone number, but I swear it goes to a phone shut in a cupboard. A friend of ours asked our MS (MP) to intervene and now surprise surprise the service is improving. Our daughter is 20 also.

Hi @carolynw and a warm welcome to the community from me!
Thank you for telling us a little bit about what has happened, it sounds like a really stressful situation. Unfortunately I have heard that the transition from children's services to adult services isn't always as smooth sailing as it should be so you're not alone in your frustration! Were you able to speak to anybody on Monday @carolynw?Unfortunately it can sometimes take big interventions like that to move services forward @TJH_Fields69, it shouldn't be the case but it seems to be happening more often now, is your daughter getting the right support now?

@Mary_Scope Yes the support is improving now, at least the first appointment with the CMHT went well.

This is good to know @TJH_Fields69 thank you. That sounds like a positive first step, I hope this continues for your daughter and they're able to put a plan in place for the right support and help for her!

@Mary I did call on tuesday they said a referral had been made .I asked where and she wasn't sure .I was told maybe I should go through my gp of which ha done and have a telephone appt. to discuss my son and his needs but this is two weeks away . If he gets his chair I will be surprised .
@TJH_Fields69 im glad your daughter is finally getting the support she deserves.

Hi @carolynw I'm sorry that his chair has been sent back. You've done the right thing by contacting the GP and hopefully that will speed things up and your son can get the right chair. I'm unsure how long this process will take. Can you contact the SEND team at the college to see if they can help? They may have another suitable chair or be able to help you with the process.

hi @Rachel_Scope the SEND department were who originally contacted me . the gp appt is only a week away now so hopefully won't take too long .its just another thing on the long list that needs to be sorted .

I hope it gets sorted easily @carolynw. Will you let us know how you get on? I've got my fingers crossed for you.
