I cant watch the full hour, but I find it interesting he says the most common trait is fitting in and socialising issue, usually this is considered an autism symptom, and this is the first instance I have seen a medical source state its an ADHD symptom. The highlight segment also mentions delayed sleep responses, this is a problem I do have.
What I wish is really for the differences between ADHD and Autism to be clearly explained somewhere (preferably not in a long video).
Its so sad that so many people get told they have depression instead of ADHD or Autism.1 -
ADHD and Autism are distinct neurodevelopmental disorders that originate from different underlying brain mechanisms. ADHD primarily affects how the brain regulates attention and activity, whereas Autism alters how the brain processes social communication and sensory information
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)ADHD centers around executive dysfunction, impulse control, and regulation of attention.
- Focus and Attention: Attention rapidly shifts. It is difficult to sustain focus across a range of unstimulating tasks, leading to frequent distractibility.
- Hyperactivity & Restlessness: Restlessness and fidgeting are common and are often used as a physical coping mechanism to help regulate focus.
- Impulsivity: Actions and words are often impulsive. Individuals might interrupt others or act without considering consequences.
- Need for Novelty: The ADHD brain seeks excitement and spontaneous action for a dopamine rush, making adherence to rigid routines difficult
Autism primarily centers on challenges in social communication, alongside a profound need for predictability and repetitive behaviors.
- Social Communication: Difficulty understanding social cues, making reciprocal conversation, and building peer relationships. The individual may take significant time to process information and respond.
- Routines and Predictability: The Autistic brain thrives on organization. Routines provide a sense of safety, and unexpected changes or lack of structure can cause severe stress.
- Behaviors and Interests: Possesses intense, highly specific interests. Often engages in repetitive patterned behaviors or has strict preferences for specific textures, foods, or clothing.
- Sensory Processing: Often involves sensory avoidance, where external stimuli like bright lights, loud noises, or certain textures can quickly lead to sensory overload.
The Overlap (AuDHD)While distinct, the two conditions frequently overlap, a combination commonly referred to as AuDHD. Individuals with AuDHD experience an internal tug-of-war: they may have a strong desire for comforting routines but struggle to maintain them, or they may simultaneously crave sensory stimulation and become easily overwhelmed by it.
@worried33 Dr Khurram Sadiq was the Dr that did my very complex face to face Autism/ADHD assessment this year. Hes one of a few Drs here in London that diagnose both, and tends to call having AuDHD "Order and Anarchy" which is rather fitting….
I hope his videos are of some help to you, and can help answer some of your questions dear heart as you travel your own road of self discovery in this eye opening, magical, yet at times deeply painful world of neurodiversity 💜
Wishing you all the very best in life😋
