Hot weather struggles

I’m quite worried about the impending heatwave affecting the south, I am reading it could be over 30c for 7 consecutive days with temps at nighttime around 20c. I really struggle with the heatwaves, does anyone else? The last one we had in May I ended up in hospital from overheating and they wanted to check my heart because of what was happening to my body and I’m becoming more and more worried about what’s coming next week. I’m already worrying about the outcome of my PIP review forms so I don’t know if this exacerbates how I feel but I don’t feel ready to get through the overheating again, for reasons I don’t understand my body doesn’t cope well at all in these higher temps. I’ve tried different things to cool my body down and nothing worked so I feel worried about what’s coming next week :(

Just a heads up, as from last week the earth is now going through something called an El Nino, which is warmer than normal temperatures across the southern-pacific. This is currently strengthening meaning from now onwards we are going to have the highest ever recorded temperatures of Earth this year and next year.

This is going to cause alot of Flooding, Draughts, Famine and shortages across the world.

Hi @yellowpineapple84. I can understand you being concerned about the heatwave, especially with your past experiences. I've just posted a few tips on how to stay cool and I'm hoping that other members will share their advice too

You've probably tried all of them, but one thing I forgot to mention is a cooling towel. You just wet it, and 'snap' it and it can stay cool for up to 3 hours. I have one and it's nice to wrap around my head or round my neck. Have you tried one?

It seems that every time I refresh the Met page, the temperature forecast for next week increases. By yesterday it had nudged up to 35 degrees and this morning was 36. Tonight, we're looking at 38 and 37 on Tuesday and Wednesday 😓

I can cope with freezing weather but living under the roof of a brick building with no garden to cool off in through a heatwave just means misery for me.

Cold water on your neck also helps cool you down as it evaporates.

Thanks @Bluebell21 I learned last month to sleep in the daytime and sit up at night with the windows open, like now. I can't imagine having to commute and do manual work so I do feel lucky to be at home on benefits.

The brain dysfunction when I overheat is not pleasant.

Thanks for sharing, I will try these things. I’m also thinking about going to stay with family in the north of the country where it is cooler but I can’t go anywhere until I know what’s happening with my PIP review. When I get contacted I need to be here I am sure. I feel trapped

@Santosha12 Hello, thank-you for this reply :) I think that is what happened to me last month, heat exhaustion all the things you described I had plus struggling to breathe and my abdomen felt like it was being constricted. It was difficult. Thanks for sharing about things you find helpful for you and I can try these too :)

I have a huge fear of DWP so I really can’t bring myself to temporarily get away and I really don’t like contacting them. I am afraid if I go away temporarily they will use it as a reason to deny me support. The PIP is really important to me and I can’t afford to lose it. I think I need to stay here. I do try and live by listening to my gut and instincts just sadly I am more afraid of the DWP so that overrides everything else in life

There are lots of helpful tips in what you’ve wrote so thank-you :) I’m sorry to read these temps are very difficult for you too, I hope you will be okay this coming week. And double pnuemonia sounds extremely difficult to go through I hope you don’t have to go through this again, I’m sorry this happened. Please be okay too this coming week :)

I think I will buy lots of watermelon, your advice has reminded me to do that this time and I will try some of these new things I’ve learned from the help you and others have shared here thanks :)

I've really been struggling with the heat lately. Haven't been able to breathe properly for the last few days which has a knock on effect with other conditions. Struggling to move around or eat anything. Bed was completely unbearable last night. And I've just read the heatwave hasn't actually started yet!? I really needed to be gone before we had weather like this again.

Electric Fans help - especially if you damp yourself down first (cold water spray) !

    Open windows, close curtains

18C here, with a cool breeze. The heat is seldom a problem on the Angus coast.

In the summer heat, oxygen from a small oxygen cylinder helps me.

@Santosha12 thank-you :) I’m really grateful for this community, this is a light when many things can feel darker. There is really great support and encouragement on here :) I have a big fan here that I am finding helpful and my windows are open at night and I’ve even fitted mosquito nets to stop all kinds of things getting inside. I hope you can be comfortable this coming week too and your tins of pineapple sound very welcome :)

I’m not sure why I’m called yellowpineapple but I like pineapples so it’s okay 😂 I think it was a name given to my account, I don’t remember choosing it but I like it! My favourite fruit 🍍

Thanks for writing to me :)

@OverlyAnxious I’m sorry you’ve been struggling to breathe recently, this is really not good. Have you told anyone, is anyone helping you? I’m struggling to sleep in a bed too, it’s too warm. I hope you can be okay this coming week, are there people around you who can help? :)

Not really, I have to live alone due to other conditions. There's no point me telling anyone either. It's been happening every year for at least the last 7. Unfortunately it just gets dismissed as 'anxiety' despite only happening between May and September. Last year I was genuinely told to do 'breathing exercises' after telling a relative I couldn't breathe in the heat. That's about as much use as telling someone with a broken leg to just 'run it off'. 😅

Sad reality is that all of the abilities I've lost over the last few years have all gone during the height of summer heat. If I was in a property where I had some control over the temperature, and could get outside into cool, fresh air whenever necessary, I'm sure I would be able to cope better with this type of weather, but I just don't see how that would ever be a realistic possibility now.

In London, we have a red weather warning and a top temperature of 40 degrees on Wednesday 😞

@egiste2r's use of an oxygen cylinder might be the answer.
