"Speaking to the Times a day after Healey's resignation, Andy Burnham said alongside the 10-year approach to defence and security, there needed to be reform of public investment and procurement.
He told the newspaper that this would reduce the welfare bill by bringing recipients into the workforce, ensuring more money was available for defence.
"I am not squeamish about saying that the plan would be to reduce the welfare bill," Burnham said."
It seems that we're damned if we do and damned if we don't !

I hardly think any serious politician is going to declare themselves 'pro benefits'. Any country wants as many people in work as possible.

I heard it on the grapevine that Burnham is against benefits cuts and is more for giving people support so they can work (carrot without stick).

I think he's the least worse option. I am not naïve at all, but I know there are people like me who with lots of support and Access to Work being funded properly and more upfront investment would help us. But has does need to remember not everyone can work, and won't ever be able to work.

No top politician is pro benefits, the little man at the back maybe. He'll be under pressure to bring the welfare bill down and stop the boats and bolster the defence budget.

After reading the article on B&W it seems he is indeed against crude benefit cuts, let's hope he stands by this. And lets hope when he talks about "moving towards a more preventative state that makes the right investments to support people into work" that he means carrot without stick.

And what people of a certain Political persuasion don't get, is that there are literally MILLIONS of mentally and/or physically disabled adults of voting age who could no more go and work than I could glide off a rooftop wearing a Batman cape/costume.

I don't see your point. Politicians everywhere chase votes, and lauding the fact that millions claim benefits, it's hardly going to help with their electability. They might understand the Importance of a safety net, but still not be 'pro benefits', that phrase implies claiming benefits is a good thing for the country!

And with what a certain company are proposing for the disabled if they become the next government, disabled people voting for them would be like Turkeys voting for Christmas or Thanksgiving.
