How can drinking whilst taking antabuse be considered an industrial accident?
1 -
My gp told me that some people can take a bad reaction even to the alcohol in mouthwash, any alcohol is a big no when taking antabuse.

No No No - the bloods and gases taken at the time show no alcohol involved at all !
Mandatory Antabuse (disulfiram) from RN course caused toxic reaction. No alcohol consumed. Collapsed, coma, seizures, hospitalised.
Coma, seizures, respiratory acidosis, bilateral globus pallidus lesions. Permanent Akinetic
Rigid Syndrome.I was given the antabuse in a huge 2 week dose which was administered by a non-medically qualified person
No follow up blood tests were carried out and MOD totally washed their hands of their responsibility.

You yourself said that you had carried on drinking alcohol while taking Antabuse so seems strange that no alcohol was found in your blood stream.
How could taking Antabuse be mandatory surely it is up to each one of us to decide if we drink alcohol or not.
I cannot help but think as I have said previously that you are comparing what we know now to what was known over thirty years ago.
Are you not looking to blame others for what you did to yourself by continuing to drink alcohol while taking Antabuse when you had been told not too.
I can see you think you have a case for holding others responsible for what happened to you but judging by how long anything like this takes even where a case can be proved you could be waiting another thirty years at least before anything like a case is even ready to go to court.
Look at the contaminated blood scandal that is still ongoing.
That is always assuming the necessary records can be found to support your claim.
Do you really want to spend all that time when you have enough money and your wife does not think this is worthwhile.
Edited to correct a couple of spelling mistakes.

The assumptions in your comment are incorrect.
My 1990 medical records show no alcohol in my system, confirmed by the Hospital blood tests and blood‑gas readings. The collapse was caused by a severe Antabuse reaction, not alcohol. This is documented in both NHS and MOD medical notes.Antabuse was not “optional” in my case — it was prescribed by a Royal Navy medical officer as part of a formal RN medical programme. I did not “choose” to take it; it was part of my treatment plan. Despite the fact that I was a civilian.
Comparing today’s knowledge to 1990 is not relevant here — the medical evidence from 1990 already shows the cause of the collapse, the absence of alcohol, and the resulting head injury.
I am not blaming others for my actions; I am relying on documented medical evidence.
The MOD and NHS records from 1990 confirm the injury was caused by Antabuse, not alcohol, and that the collapse resulted in a head injury that has had lifelong consequences.1 -
On the 7th August you said - "I wasn't drinking enough to do the damage". Now you say you had given up 6 weeks prior?
Anyway, it isn't us you have to convince. What has your solicitor to say on the matter?
1 -
That's because I was told differently to start with by various people
I have always believed that I had been drinking
I don't have a solicitor - I'm doing it all myself with the aid of AI, my MP and my Financial Adviser

I have made no assumptions I have gone off what you have previously said.
I have nothing further to say on this matter as your story seems to be changing every time you tell it.

Hi Wibbles, I just wanted to say that it sounds like you went through a truly horrific experience back then, and the permanent health consequences you are living with must be incredibly difficult. It is entirely right that you are using your MP and your medical records to seek answers. Please don't let anyone on here discourage you or make you feel like you have to justify your documented medical history. Stay strong and keep focusing on your health and your case.

@Wibbles I don't know if this will be of help, but because there is so much I thought this might be very helpful to you. The Legal Hour with Daniel Barnett - LBC, gives free legal advise for things like employment issues and or health related lawsuits. You would have to call in and explain everything so he has all the information. He has been very good at helping lots of people.

Thank you - I am and will

The drinking claim isn’t true and isn’t supported by anything.
My situation comes from documented administrative failures and missing records, not alcohol.
Personal assumptions don’t change the evidence.

@ Wibbles your situation is very interesting. As someone might be trying to get the thread closed, can you please keep us up to date with everything that's going on. So many people have had or think they have a case for medical negligence. This is an important topic because it does not get talked about enough.
I have been giving incorrect medication for years, then they doubled it, which actually made my symptoms much much worse, possibly causing erosion. I had to figure this by myself (some medical professionals have quietly agreed I should not have been given that medication) the medication that was supposed to help me, made my symptoms 10x worse.
I don't know anything about how these things work, so would I have not even thought to do anything about it. There are so many parts to this kind of stuff, including making formal complaints or requesting an investigation or a review? I have no idea, I just hope this thread stays open so other people can share their experiences.

Wibbles wrote this on 26th July:
"OK But I would have at least expected a response from CAB. Antabuse requires close supervision, regular monitoring, and strict counselling on alcohol avoidance; I received none of this, took the drug for 14 days, continued drinking because I did not understand the danger, and suffered a severe toxic reaction that caused permanent globus pallidus injury.""took the drug for 14 days, continued drinking because I did not understand the danger," is what has led to confusion on this thread rather than someone trying to close it down.

I'm glad this discussion is still able to continue.
Wibbles, I hope you are managing okay this week and that your MP is able to make some real headway with your medical records. Please keep us updated on your progress whenever you feel up to it.

Update :
Linked to my claim for IIDB is exactly what happened to me - 36 years ago - and I am currently awaiting a SAR from MOD, But they are causing me problems, in that whilst not exactly refusing to release MY personal information - they will not give me a "reply by" date -having exceeded the allowable month by several weeks - I have brought in the Information Commissioners Office to get this cleared up !

OK Failed first attempt on IIDB - But on a simple :
"We have looked at your claim and decided you cannot get IIDB for The accident which took place on 25 May 1990.
This is because the accident is not an industrial accident. The accident did not arise out of and in the course of your employment, or whilst on an approved employment training scheme or course."This is clearly incorrect - since I was employed at the time and WAS on a training course
So once proven - I should win a Mandatory Reconsideration
They have agreed to using Reasonable Adjustments - so I can communicate and send documents via Email….

I'm glad they've made reasonable adjustments for you. Do you think it will be easy to prove?
