Hello, just joined the forum.  I'm 69yrs old currently awaiting an appointment at the musculoskeletal department for severe lower back pain causing problems walking and weakness in both legs. I'm not coping well as I love walking and used to walk 4 or 5 miles each day with my dog.  GP thinks it is lumbar stenosis.

Hello @Libbs - welcome to this friendly & supportive community, & thank you for joining. I'm sorry to read you're not able to walk as much due to severe lower back pain & leg weakness. I hope it's not too long until you get your appointment. Just to say, physiotherapy can help.....there are exercises which can, & do help.
I've had lower back pain since I was a teenager, but exercising gently is my mainstay. As a physio (tho I haven't worked as such for a long time), I know specific exercise can help, having both taught it, & having used it myself for so long. My best wishes. :)

Thank you all, it's good having people who understand what it's like to be in constant pain.  I have a telephone appointment tomorrow with a nurse specialist, I'm hoping I can get some physio.

I will do, I have a feeling it's a screening call to see if I need to see the consultant or not. as I only had a telephone consultation with my GP.  I do have problems with L4/L5 going back six years so he referred me straight away.

Hi @Libbs - Even before Covid-19 these sort of telephone consultations happened. I remember my husband visiting our GP due to some pain issues several years ago. Our GP thought he might benefit from also getting physio in their department in addition to the exercises I'd shown him. He got a phone call from a physio, & immediately asked if she would speak to me. I mentioned all the exercises I had given my husband, & she said that was exactly the same as she would do, & she didn't need to see him.
I hope your phone appointment with a nurse specialist goes well. Do mention your L4-5 problems, & your GP's concerns about possible lumbar stenosis, & how your condition is affecting you now. Do ask to see a physio.
I'm sorry, when you mentioned you were expecting an appointment at the muscoskeletal department, I presumed this was for physio. Not so long ago my son-in-law had a letter referring him to the same, & asked me about it.....it was to see a physio.
As Steve says, please do let us know how you get on. :)

    How are things with you?
What happened when you had your call?
I'm sorry that you are in pain everyday. I do hope that you will be helped soon and you can carry on with day to day life.
Have you been out on any meds?

I have same pain in my back in exact spots also S1 and L2 - L3
I had to go for an mri and then physio which does help. I was also sent to the pain clinic which was OK but not for me.
The exercises I was given I do daily and they do help.
I was told just don't over do things. No heavy lifting, advice like that.
I'm.also on 1800 mgs of gabapentin  daily.
Take whatever treatment and scans they ask you to take then you will find out for sure exactly what is wrong.

I wish you well and maybe you'll return to update the community please.

    Best wishes

Hi @Libbs! I also wanted to welcome you to the online community, and check to see how you got on with your call. I thought you might find it helpful to check out the Dealing with Chronic Pain category on the community if you haven't already.
