Despairing of ever getting SDS to help pay for respite care for my 11 year son with GDD. Council are saying there's no funding and I should apply again when he's 12 years old as he's entitled to more funding. Am widowed parent of two disabled kids, oldest is Aspergers. Not sure exactly who's getting the respite care, to be honest.

I'm sorry it's been a struggle up to press to get SDS - can I just check you mean self-directed support? Do you live in England? If you could give us those details it would help us think about what else you might be entitled to.

Being a widowed parent too must come with it's own challenges, I'm very sorry about the loss of your other half. Are you managing ok day to day? Do you get much support? Yep, I'm afraid more questions but fingers crossed we can help in terms of thinking about emotional/practical support out there for you.

Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much residential respite care is for 11 year old with GDD. No physical disabilities but has significant learning difficulties which means he needs constant supervision. Just trying to get idea of costs.

I am not sure of the costs myself, but you might find this resource on the NHS website helpful, which gives an overview of respite care and includes some information about what you may expect to pay.
