I am a wheelchair user who had to retire early from my job as a Mental Health Nurse a few years ago because of my disability. Me and my wife have struggled financially ever since, but because of my NHS pension we cannot apply for universal credit. I live in a town where the vast majority of of shops are inaccessible to me because of steps in the entrances.

Hi and welcome to the community
Have you tried claiming for pip ? If awarded any daily living then your wife may be eligible for carers allowance
I'm in a wheelchair too in a small village and have the same issues with access -
Hello @Spatz! and welcome to the Scope online community and thank you for joining. How are you doing today? I hope you're managing to stay cool in the heat. Accessibility is, unfortunately, a huge issue and many of the experiences as told by our community members in the Accessibility discussion thread may resound with you.
I note you have had to retire early and as janer1967 says PIP may be worth considering as it is not a means tested benefit. Were you to be successful in claiming daily living component PIP if your wife provides care for you she might, subject to certain conditions, be entitled to claim Carers Allowance.
Please feel free to take a look around, and get stuck in. Here are a few good places to start:- Categories page - to see the kinds of topics we discuss here
- Recent discussions - to see what people are talking about right now
- Coffee lounge - the home of our casual conversation and games
We are a very friendly bunch of people here on the online community and if there is anything you need to know just ask and we will do what we can to help.
Take care
Sue
