It's not the PIP award you need. In with the decision letter is a separate certificate that states your entitlement to the free road tax, it's this you need and not the PIP award.

You're only entitled to the free road tax if you have Enhanced mobility. If you have standard mobility then you're only entitled to the 50% reduction.

It's called the entitlement certificate. See link.

This is true hubby only got the standard and is still entitled to the 50% reduction but there doesn't seem to be a  form one can send off for to get this and no question to answer on any other one or the link above  to say you have the standard rate.

This is because the only way to claim the 50% reduction to send all of your documents, including your PIP award letter to DVLA. See link on how to claim this.

I have spoken to a senior customer service advisor at the DWP who told me that the certificate of entitlement is only issued to people awarded the enhanced rate of mobility, it enables them to claim 100% refund of their vehicle road tax, people who are awarded the standard rate of mobility are entitled to 50% refund of their vehicle road tax. To differentiate between the two groups the standard rate mobility recipients are issued a statement of entitlement which enables them to claim 50% refund of their vehicle road tax.

This is an old thread from over 3 years that someone's commented on today. I would assume that after 3 years the OP has sorted the issue.

Hi Poppy, I’ve never had a separate certificate all the years I have been claiming disability. I’ve just been awarded the enhanced rate for a further 4 years and all I have is at the back of my award letter is a page headed, “Statement of Entitlement”, could this possibly be what I need? TIA

Just bare in mind, though you will probably know this, yes it entitles you to 50% off but you have to pay it upfront. So if for example, a years tax is £192 you have to pay £96 which is half. I thought it meant it would half your payments each month but it doesn't, whatever the years amount is, you still have to pay half of it upfront to get the discount. My tax is over £200 a year and I didn't have the amount upfront to pay half of it so i can't use it as i just pay it monthly.

Won't let me edit post. My tax is over £300 a month not £200 so i would have had to pay about £160 or something upfront at the time and I didn't have it.

A year* Not a month. Why can't we edit our posts? It's annoying. Sorry for the spam.

I have just been awarded PIP, standard for living allowance and enhanced for mobility allowance, as the initial post ref Certificate of Entitlement or Statement of Entitlement, I to have had this problem at the Post Office this week for initial change to road tax exemption application, I too contacted DWP and again was sent duplicates of my initial letter and statement which is not being accepted at the Post Office, I have followed the guidelines on the documentation and presented other supporting documents and still got knocked back, are we saying if you have standard in living and enhanced in mobility you can only apply for 50% road tax deduction and have to apply from the DVLA or I am entitled to 100% road tax deduction and have to apply through the Post Office, if so can someone tell me where I can get this Certificate of Entitlement from because DWP just keep sending me Statement of entitlement when I ask and I am getting fed up of being in a phone que or a post office que being sent around in circles

This thread is from 2019 that you've commented on. The daily living part is irrelevant for road tax. It's the mobility part that counts and because you have Enhanced mobility then it's 100% free road tax you're entitled to and yes it's the Certificate Of Entitlement you need. You will need to take all your documents to your local post office.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ins216-how-to-apply-for-free-disabled-tax

As this is a new award then you should have received that document with your PIP award letter.

Hi Poppy thank you for your response I have not received a certificate of entitlement separate to the PIP letter, I phoned DWP and requested it, they on two occasions have sent me the statement of entitlement which the post office knocks back, has there been a change in titles and is it a possibility of a breakdown in communications between DWP and the PO, could I apply directly to DVLA although the aformentioned guidelines state for an existing car first tax exemption application should be through the PO

It's still known as the Certificate Of Entitlement. Unfortunately, when applying for the first time it can only be done at your local PO.

I believe the Statement of Entitlement is just a breakdown of where you actually scored the points, that's not what's needed.

I have asked twice for a certificate of entitlement and the 2 responses plus the original notification of PIP awarded just had the statement which are correct are a breakdown of where you have scored is the certificate called something else by them and I did explain to the DWP operator / case worker what I needed and what it was for both times and resulted in the same or is it simply I am not entitled

It's not called anything else and has always been known as "Certificate Of Entitlement" as I advised, it should have been included with your PIP award letter on a separate page. It's pretty much like a letter, with a reference number on it. At the top it will say "Certificate of Entitlement to Personal Independence Payment."

It's very easy to miss this in with your award letter so please double check everything that came with it.

As you have Enhanced mobility PIP then you're entitled to free road tax. See link for confirmation.
