PIP assessment

Hi not about myself but my mum, she just had her PIP assessment and she said it went very quickly, he did not let her go in much detail and was on the phone for about 20 mins. And it was just very quick. She already on Universal credit sick so unfit for work has she had very bad arthritis in her hand, shoulder and legs and she has to use a walking stick now to get about. So not sure what to make of it and why she was not able to go into details on how it affects her daily. Can someone tell if this is normal

20 minutes does sound very quick @jo1984. That does not necessarily mean it is bad, but it is concerning if he did not let her go into detail about how she is affected by her conditions. How did she feel about it afterwards?
If you wish, you can request to see the report once it is produced.

My mum said he asked her some of the questions but not all and she felt like he just wanted to get off the phone as soon as possible. But she did manage to tell him she can only walk with a walking stick, she can not cook anymore because she can not open anything because of her hand and that she struggles getting in and out of the bath but it was very short and she was unable to go into details. Like I said she on UC not fit for work because of the arthritis and she basically said the same thing for that but it has got worse over the last 12mths or so. We wrote everything out so she did not forget anything but because it was so short she did not say anything want was written and she not very hopeful of been awarded anything now.

Hi @jo1984, that does sound quite quick. But sometimes they have all the information they need to make a decision from the forms and might just ask a few short questions to clarify anything they're not sure about. It doesn't necessarily mean that your mum won't be awarded anything.
As Jimm mentioned, you could ask for a copy of the report to see what that says.
Fingers crossed for a positive result!

Thanks Rosie, well hopefully she gets awarded something but we will c.

Well a update on my mum's claim, it does not sound good. She rang them up to get the report and ask if a decision as been made and they said yes, it was made Tuesday 26/11/24 so just over a week after her assessment but they would not give her the decision, they said that she would have to wait for the letter so I guessing she has not pass. She is not happy as it seems like they just rushed through the assessment and the person did not let her speak half the time and now PIP just took just of a week to make a decision. Definitely not going to be good news. Not sure if anyone has had this done to them.

Heya @jo1984 I'd try not to think too much into it, they'll always say they can't give the decision and to wait for the letter and sometimes decisions are made quickly. Plus even if they say no, you can still ask for a MR (Mandatory Reconsideration) and if that's still a no, you can go to tribunal, which currently has a 70% success rate. So it's not the end of the road by a long shot. We've all got our fingers crossed! 😊

Thanks. It just annoying, as my mum is already on the UC sick for arthritis because she can not use her hand anymore and she has to use a walking stick and even than it she can only walk a short distance and he did not even ask her these questions. Well everyone says that if they do not tell you on the phone about a decision it normally means no you have not been awarded anything and it was Tuesday so if she did get award I guessing a payment would be in her bank by now and there is nothing. I no you can do the MR has I still waiting for mine but it just annoying that the person doing the assessment did not do there job right and now my mum is going without because he wants to get her off the phone as quickly as possible

If she was awarded PIP, the payment would not be in her account that quickly, so it's best to just wait for the letter to arrive. 🤞

The length of time the decision took is no indication of what the decision is and it doesn't mean she's been refused. It just means they made the decision very quickly, which does happen.
Sometimes when you ring PIP not all advisors will tell you what that decision was. Some will tell you to wait for the letter.
Once she knows what the decision is if she's not happy she can request the MR.

Ok, thanks for the info. It seems unlikely she passed because on them not giving her the decision on the phone and she did not get a text either, the last text she got was just telling her that the report was there. So not very hopeful. Just very disappointed in the system that my mum now has to go through the stress of the MR and a tribunal to get want she should have got now.

Thanks poppy, I do not think my mum very hopeful has when she did the assessment he went through the questions very quickly and did not give her time to answer the questions and he did not ask her some of the questions. The assessment was about 20-25mins and now they made there decision quickly and not giving a answer on the phone. And most I seen payment is made before people get there letter but nothing for my mum and the decision was made on Tuesday. So we are not to hopeful so it looks like she will have to do a MR.

Just a little update, still no letters for my mum and no payment in to her bank. I no if she had been awarded anything her first payment may not have gone in yet but the back payments would have done by now, has the decision was last Tuesday and even if the computers system did not update until Wednesday that still 4 days not including weekends. So I think we are 100% sure she was not awarded anything so MR is the next step.

Hi…I know how you feel….waiting for that letter to drop is so frustrating. However the letter will drop and you will know the outcome. Fingers are crossed for your mum.

Thanks. I think we already no the answer because there been no payment and it been 4 days. It just very annoying and wanting for Royal mail to deliver the letter is like waiting all year because royal mail is just very bad nowadays.

While backpay often arrives before the letter, that letter can take several weeks to arrive.
I don't think 4 working days is enough time at all to calculate and pay any backpay. Remember this is the DWP!

Thanks Kimmy87 I think because the person who did the assessment was quick and did not asked all the questions and the fact when my mum called pip they wouldn't not say want the decision was, i think she is sure she did not get it, i trying to stay positive and still hope she may be awarded something but the waiting is so annoying.

Why do you think the assessment being quick is an indication of a refusal? My quickest PIP assessment in person was 10 minutes and that review my award was increased.
They will only ask the questions if they need answers, if they have the information already there may not be any need to ask any further questions.

This was not a renewal, it was a brand new claim. She is on UC sick but never claim PIP before. And pretty everyone on here and people I know who are on PIP said it was at least 45mins to 1-45mins so 20-25mins seems a little quick.

I had a brand new claim this year, I didn't have a full assessment mine was what's known as a paper based assessment.
As part of that I had an unscheduled call with a few questions, took about 20 minutes.
I was awarded Enhanced for both, 6 years 😊

My mum lasted 20-25mins but her was a scheduled so probably was not paper base.
