It’s entirely up to you whether you choose a telephone claim or an online claim. However, keep in mind that opting for an online claim doesn’t mean you can’t manage it by telephone as well. The main benefit of an online claim is that it gives you easier access to view your statements and provides more options for communicating with them when needed.

With an online claim, you'll also be able to view your statements each month without having to wait to get through to them on the phone.

Good luck on the 8th, and please let us know how you get on, @ChrisSCOPEhtfc94.

It’s the intentions Morgan - to do it next Wednesday. I want to do it on that day. It’s WHETHER I can get through to one of the Help to Claim Service advisors on their phone line. I want to go through them. If it’s too busy, that scuppers my plans. When I do my claim it will be over the phone.

If I can get my claim submitted next Wednesday my assessment period would be 8-7th each calendar month. That should mean I receive my first payment 7 days after 7th Feb - which would be 14th.

Of course however I want twice monthly payments so if I’ve got this right, my payment dates would be 14th and 28th each calendar month*.

*yes, I know even with set dates on an APA it’s not guaranteed you’ll get your payments on those dates. It’ll depend on the layout of each month.

If I didn’t get the severe disability premium I wouldn’t wait for the migration letter either. I would prefer to be in control of when I migrate like you

Yes, ESA claimants like me who aren’t in receipt of the SDP have more freedom on when they can choose to move over. It’s not a risk moving over. If the SDP is part of an individual’s ESA claim then it’s in their best interests to wait for the letter to arrive.

I absolutely want to kick-start the process next Wednesday. It’s just whether they Help to Claim Service phone line isn’t busy. If they’re too busy to take my call I’d be rather frustrated.

I have been told by my mother if I can’t submit the claim next Wednesday as planned then I should delay moving over, wait until the end of the football season when I’m not doing as much with myself then submit a claim for it if the letter still hasn’t come. The football season ends in May. I go to many football matches - my local team is Huddersfield .

The letter could arrive before May but perhaps it won’t as well. Goodness knows how they distribute the letters. The claimant honestly couldn’t predict when they’ll receive it.

My mother is autistic I think and even she thinks she is. She shows all the typical behaviour of someone who has autism. Stuff like benefits unsettles her even when it’s not her claim. If I can’t get the claim submitted next Wednesday I think I’ll continue like I am receiving my ESA payments, wait until May when the football season is out of the way then submit a claim in May if the letter still hasn’t arrived.

I’ll see what happens on Wednesday first, see if I can get through to one of the Citizens Advice Help to Claim Service advisors so they can help me submit the claim. If not, I’ll just continue on ESA for now until May, get the football season out of the way then get that claim submitted to UC in May should the letter not arrive before then.

Having had further discussions with mother, me and her have agreed together to delay a “voluntary migration” for now. She thinks this, it’s not like I’m not getting any money at all. I’m still getting something to live on at the moment and I do agree with her. She thinks as well I have a settled routine at the present time, being able to attend my local team’s football matches, going out on my train rides.

We will of course still keep an eye out on our letter box 📮📫📬📪, to see whether the migration notice comes before the end of the football ⚽️ 🥅 season in May. If it still hasn’t decided to arrive by the time the football season comes to a close, then I’ll do a move across to UC from the ESA Support Group.

The migration notice could come before the month of May or it may not, you just can’t predict. No ESA claimant can look into a crystal ball 🔮 and find out exactly when they’ll get their letter ✉️ . I don’t even know the DWP decides to distribute them to the claimants on ESA 🤔🤔.

When I do make my claim for UC in the future I’ll be posting my update on this thread 👍. I’ll be sure to do that.

    https://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/news/63%2C000-esa-claimants-to-migrate-to-uc-every-month-from-february

I could still get my letter before May because the DWP are meant to be ramping up the number of migration notices they’re sending out to ESA claimants from next month. I do wonder if this story has any truth to it?

I know I’ll be better off in terms of the amount of money I receive when I do eventually migrate. Not choosing to migrate next week won’t make any difference to that 👍.

I do know it will definitely be this year that I get my letter ✉️ because they’re meant to be done sending them all out by the end of this year (December).

I know as well when I do my migration that I shouldn’t have any hassle with being asked for fit notes ✅✔️☑️👍. A fix has been applied to the systems based on a story I saw last year ☑️✔️✅. It sounds like the system does a better job now at detecting that you’re a claimant moving across from income-related ESA and that you’re placed into the Support Group equivalent on UC (the LCWRA group) straight away or pretty fast.

    Update:

I’m actually going to be submitting my claim from next month now and I have my mother’s blessing for doing it, she’s fine with me doing it next month. She knows how much it bugs me. I literally talk about UC every week. Just delaying it and delaying it, a “voluntary migration”, isn’t doing me any good. We could get to August this year and a migration letter ✉️ may still not have come to me.

I can’t submit a claim for UC this month now however, I have missed my ideal opportunity to move across. That’s because in a certain week every month, I receive a PIP payment and ESA payment on back to back days. That won’t happen again now until the week commencing Monday 3rd February. In that week I’ll get a PIP payment on the Tuesday then an ESA payment on the Wednesday. On that particular Wednesday, 5th February, I’ll SUBMIT my claim. I know it’s best to submit your claim on or around a date that payment from ESA goes into your bank account.

Two weeks after Wednesday 5th February, on Wednesday 19th February, I’ll get my final ESA payment which should be £318.10. That’s the amount I have been getting from ESA since the benefit rates increased last year. Then, 2 weeks after, I’ll get another PIP payment on Tuesday 4th March, with my first UC payment coming on Tuesday 11th March. I thought that I’d be left 3 weeks without money after my two-week run-on payment form ESA but in theory I’ll only be going through a 2 week period without any money. My PIP comes to my rescue and starting my claim in a week where I get back to back payments from PIP and ESA helps me avoid a 3 week gap without money in the 5 week wait for the first UC payment.

My assessment periods will be 5th - 4th each calendar month and I can assure you, even if I don’t have to, that I won’t be delaying beyond the first week next month. I literally talk about UC week in, week out. It’s doing my head in. It’s better to just get the ball rolling, for the sake of my head, and also to just get on to UC. I don’t have to wait for any migration notice to show up, I won’t be entitled to any transitional protection because I’ll be better off anyway. I don’t get the Severe Disability Premium in my ESA, that’s because my mother is my main carer and she gets paid Carer’s Allowance.

I only get the Enhanced Disability Premium and that’s why my ESA payments only add up to £318.10 every fortnight. Those on ESA who are only getting the EDP don’t have to wait for a migration letter to arrive, they’ll be better off and they can just choose to do a “voluntary migration”, like I will be in 3 weeks time.
