@Catherine21 it is an uncertain time during transitions like this, and social media often doesn't help. A lot of scare mongering, over exaggeration, and fake news unfortunately. Sometimes it's hard to see the wood through the trees which can take it's toll so I completely understand how you feel.
I know it's easier said than done (because I'm a nightmare for not taking my own advice), but try to take some time away from social media and news each day and do something nice for you. Even if it's just a little distraction that makes you feel good. 💛

Just to clarify, I'm pretty sure Reeves' visit to China was to obtain 600mil investment INTO the UK over five years, NOT giving money to China, which would be an odd thing to do.
I actually get quite concerned when I see how mangled news gets on this forum, especially when the source of that information is the right-leaning press, who are the most hostile to us.
I also think be careful what you wish for. I voted Lib but I would rather have the current government than anything Tory or Reform. They want to remove all benefits from everyone and also the EHCR. It's true Labour aren't perfect but the situation the country is currently in is in large part due to 14 years of Tory mishandling of public services. No government, not even a very sympathetic one, would be able to fix all that in six months.
The fact people want Labour out after that short period of time shows the influence of the right wing press on people's thinking, and that's terrifying to me. It also undermines the democracy of our country when people just want to overturn it because they don't like the result. Media outlets and opposition parties reinforcing that shows a lack of respect for democracy. Remember these same people argued against a second Brexit vote on the grounds of respecting democratic expression - it goes both ways.
As disabled people we can't be duped by people who want to hurt us more than the current government do. We have no perfect solution to the current problems and I am as worried as anyone else by the changes that might come this year, in my case for PIP. At the same time, I'll deal with them because this government is the lesser evil.6 -
You are correct about the 600 million, but I disagree with the rest of your post. It isn’t ’right wing’ press that’s causing concern, it’s a totally inept chancellor and leader. The raise in Nic’s and the increase in the living wage will cripple business on top of the highest electricity prices, and will cause all the job providers to flee or not recruit. There’s a reason prices aren’t coming down.
The changes in pensioners winter fuel will cause real hardship and result in deaths, the inheritance tax changes are dangerous, and for our farmers, a real worry about food supplies. There seems to be plenty of cash for settling strike disputes though, in fact massive amounts. None of these things are anything remotely to do with the press. I lived through the seventies and it wasn’t pretty, now we have more of the same.These are foolhardy decisions made that are negative. More money needs to be borrowed and the debt is massive. That has to come from somewhere and it will be us, probably. If the government can refuse the waspi women after an ombudsman has decided there should be compensation, then I’ve no idea where it all could lead. One thing is for sure, this government needs to go.
It’s seven months in and they have trashed the economy. But changes to disability benefits would take a good while, because of the protocol needed to push them through. We are serving a debt of multi billions, after being the top of the G7 for growth and minimal inflation only seven months ago. And no, I’m not a Tory. But we do need change, just not the kind Starmer is offering.5 -
I'm so depressed and anxious about the changes, dosent help that the doctor had stopped my antidepressants on the 2nd of Jan without telling me. Went to pick some more up on Friday as it takes days for it to go through. Review on Wed with pharmacy. So would be without them since Thurs. I said I haven't got any left . Receptionist wasn't bothered. Yet had a telephone review to see how I was getting on with my inhaler. To top it all short notice electric test for renters. My daughter bedroom a tip. And she's has bpd and autism so has a go at me when I say about tiding it up. Saying I stress her. And now this with pip .

Hi all,
It's important to remember that the UK is mandated by law to spend a certain amount on foreign aid and turning against others who are having a difficult time won't make things better here.
While both foreign aid and welfare are funded through taxes and government borrowing, money the UK spends on foreign aid comes from a different budget than the funds allocated to UK welfare.
A reduction or increase in foreign aid would not automatically affect the other budgets, including benefits and welfare.
Plus, foreign aid is often humanitarian but also has benefits to the UK economy, security and reputation.

My hope is that the current govt introduces any welfare support changes in a more staged interim manner aligned with NHS/Social care reform. My worry is that they will continue with the reforms broadly as developed by the Tories ( which they now criticise). We won’t know for sure - I still feel that this will not be the case. We do need to prepare for such cuts given the financial mindset. My worry is that the current govt is too much like the Tories/Reform proposals - Time will tell.

If they cut spending to milliband hair brain projects which would help. I understand climate change is important, fully want it but putting solar panels across farm lands, etc we don't get a lot of sun. Planting trees would help.

I don’t think they have a plan except to overspend and keep all unions and the civil service happy. The only problem there is that they take money from the vulnerable hoping for less trouble, eg waspi,the elderly and disabled, social care etc. I would be happier to see them leave before any more damage is done. We have never had such an unpopular bunch in power or a less liked PM.

Dead right to raise this TomZee. If you force long-term sick / disabled people into abject poverty, you aren't going to get very good outcomes + it'll cost a lot more in the longer term.

I believe that spending all the Billions of £'s on green issues is a waste of money.
What's the point of reducing emissions of CO2 from UK when China and India are increasing their emissions?
At one point, a few years ago, China were commissioning a new coal fired power station every few weeks.
It's almost as if the government believes that our atmosphere is limited to UK whereas the truth is the global atmosphere is everyones.

I think green issues are a waste of time and money personally, the money spent on that should be spent on UKs citizens, like disabled and elderly, rather than green issues.

@Catherine21 I think we had relative peace in the last years on Tory rule because we were living in hope of a Labour government🤔 I couldn't have imagined the reality until last spring when I had cause to approach my Labour MP, who was not standing for reelection, about a DWP matter.

Zipz, my Lab MP repeatedly tried to mislead me over benefits regulations in 2014 and 2015.
The DWP usually appeals unfavourable judicial review outcomes 🙄
We've had relative peace because none of the political parties wanted us discussing benefit matters..

I think it's a case of the more countries that take part in lowering emissions, the better. And by doing our part, we're helping the whole world. 😊
