My name is Olivia, I am a PhD Researcher at the University of Kent, investigating ‘Experiences of Cerebral Palsy and Multiple Sclerosis in Britain Between 1980 and 2010’. I am passionate about improving disability accessibility, visibility, social perceptions and treatments, and feel that studying history, from the perspective of the people impacted, is the way to do this.

As part of my historical research project I am looking for people who were living in Britain and had CP or MS between 1980 and 2010, families/carers of people with CP or MS in this period, or anyone who worked for charities (such as SCOPE, the MS Society, or MS Trust) between 1980 and 2010, to participate in a semi-structured oral history interview lasting between 1 and 2 hours, to discuss their experiences.

Interviews will be conducted online and will be driven by your experiences, with questions centring around what you wish to discuss. No forceful questioning will occur, you will be free to withdraw at any point if you wish, and you will be kept anonymous within the research through a unique code assigned to you.

If you are interested in participating please do get in touch!

Contact Olivia on experiencescpms@kent.ac.uk for further information, to ask any questions, or to register your interest.

I look forward to hearing from you, thank you!

I'm intruiged by the choice of 2 specific impairments: one lifelong and brain centred and the other acquired and (usually) progressive and muscle related.  But maybe that's the point!

Hi @Forgoodnesssake, thank you for your interest in my research! You are exactly right; there are numerous reasons why I chose to focus my research on Cerebral Palsy and Multiple Sclerosis. In particular, to explore experiences (with a focus on society) between 1980 and 2010 from two perspectives; one of a lifelong impairment, and another usually acquired later in life.

When is the deadline for applying, has it passed? I'm not available the last two weeks in July but are ok for any time in August.

Hi @daz2 thank you for your message. You haven't missed the deadline! I will be starting the interviews from September 2023 and have no formal deadline for applications as yet - I have planned to continue interviewing into September 2024 (and beyond if required). If you email me at experiencescpms@kent.ac.uk we can discuss this more if you are interested. Thank you! Olivia
