A Dr from the wca Assesment centre rang my husband (sons appointee) asked questions about school, college, mental health , physical needs, daily routine & asked at the end if our son would do a memory test but our son felt uncomfortable to do this as this is one of his main conditions ,he has CP & short term memory due to lack of oxygen during or at birth, the Dr said that’s fine we don’t want him to feel uncomfortable, he asked if we had any questions then said he’d write report and send to DWP.
At least it’s done now but just need to wait until son gets his decision.
Our son wants to work like a lot of people but he will need a lot of help getting into a job that will provide help whilst he works etc.

I'm glad it seemed to go ok. Hopefully he won't be waiting too long for a decision. Some people have that quite quickly but others not as quick. Also there's the closing days for Christmas and New year too, which will delay that decision.

Sorry I have another question

If our son gets LCW not the LCWRA then will the job centre work coach help him find a job that is suitable for his needs? Or is that all up to our son?

If he gets LCW you can appeal the decision, if you feel he meets one of the criteria for LCWRA.

For LCW he would have regular appointments with a work coach, they can't force him to apply for jobs but he will be expected to do activities in preparation for work.

We aren’t saying he can’t work obviously we are just saying that he will need more support to get a job that will suit his needs and an employer who has reasonable adjustments for our son to carry out a job. A job that has people with patience and time to help our son learn the job requirements & any changes that occur they will give him time to adjust to the new job routine. Our worry is he is getting more depressed and lacking motivation to go out as he now has nothing to do since leaving college at 19, all his mates work and he wants to be the same as them but he realises he will need adjustments and support.

Regardless of what the decision is if he finds work he can apply for Access to work grant. Even if the decision is LCWRA this doesn’t mean he can’t work at all. People do work while claiming this.

I’m not sure how good a local job centre would be about supporting to find a suitable job if I’m honest.

So far the disability work coach at our local job centre has been good with our Son, no pressure just gentle encouragement and confidence boosting which our son needs. The work coach has also put no obligation options for training schemes that don’t interfere with UC etc which our son hasn’t looked at or even open link to but so far we have had no problems with our local job centre but that doesn’t mean we won’t have problems going forward I know.
I am trying to remain positive (I am naturally negative)

I am just a mum who wants the best for their child/ adult child without over powering them & what they can or can’t do. It’s difficult as 3 out of 5 of our children need or will need extra support into & during adult life. I find it hard personally not to do too much if that makes sense.

Gp has done fit note from today until 31/3/2025.
That’s one less thing to worry about.

That's fantastic news!!! No further fit notes are needed and he will be entitled to an extra £416.19/month from the 4th month after he provided his first fit note.

What date did he claim UC? I think I remember that you provided the first fit note either on the same date or within 7 days, is that correct?

He's been awarded LCWRA, the only thing you need to do is stop supplying Fit Notes.

As they say you'll be notified in future about the next review. In practice reviews have been suspended for quite a few years for the vast majority in LCWRA. So significant backlogs exist in the system.

He will no longer have a work coach due to the LCWRA. I'm unsure what voluntary work coach help is available. He can still look for work if that is what he wants.

Our son defo needs to find something to do in the day, he is in bed til 12:30/1pm then stays up til early hours cos he can’t sleep, we try to encourage him to go out with us or with his mates but he just says I’m too tired or I don’t feel like it. I’m unsure what else we can do?! It is sad & hard to watch as a parent.
