Automated front door for disabled access

Hi everyone,

I’m currently renovating my Mum’s house for her so that she can continue living there with her limited mobility.

She can move around inside with the aid of a rollator but needs her mobility scooter for venturing outside and to the shops.

I’m currently looking for a way to automate the opening, closing and locking of her front door so that she can access the house without relying on anyone to be there all the time to “let her out like a cat” as she says!

I can find lots of kit online but have no idea how to bring this all together in a safe and secure solution.

Has anyone had to look at something like this before? Any suggestions on where I can start looking would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Fred

Hey @FSJW, welcome to the community 😊 I think it's great that you're renovating your mum's house to help her there. I'm afraid I am not sure exactly how to answer your question however 😕 I do know that normally for instances like these we recommend getting an assessment done by the council, who then contract a company that specialises in this work to carry it out.

Are you attempting to do something similar to what you see in many commercial properties? Where there is a button either side that will open the door, but also adding in some kind of lock system that your mum can easily access?

    Hi Fred,

If you have access to Youtube, do a search for Paul Hibbert. The bloke is a home automation super freak, he has done videos on door locks etc etc.

However, for automating a door being opened that is another matter and a lot harder to do.

It would also be risky, just in case the door got stuck in a closed or open position, so it would be a massive security risk.

You could talk to your local council about doors such as this, or depending upon the circumstances maybe get her into supported living if eligible for council housing.

    Hope this helps

Hi @FSJW. Have you had any luck with your mum's door?
